The lushly laid-out, usually rigorous and ever-trendy magazine Artforum is one of the long-running successes of the critical community. Newman (co-editor, Defining Modern Art: Selected Writings of Alfred H. Barr, Jr.) is well placed as a former managing editor of ArtNews magazine to tell the tale of the first dozen years of the magazine and its crucial championing of conceptual art, which eventually triumphed. Yet this bloated and repetitive volume suffers from its format: mostly unchallenged statements of "oral history" from various journalists and editors who were there. The extensive recollections include much vicious infighting and backstabbing, especially involving the polemicist and poetaster (and if this book is any evidence, nasty-tempered) Michael Fried, who is told on by a number of interviewees. And few pages in modern art history can be as boring as Newsweek art critic Peter Plagens's detailed account of his schooling, various fellowships and jobs, faithfully printed here word for word. Newman reportedly spent nine years on this project, which may have been far too many. The more terse statements, such as those by veteran art historians Robert Rosenblum and David Rosand, are among the most lucid and scene-setting. The late Meyer Schapiro, one of the ?minences grises of modernist studies, gives a noble and benevolent impression, and one suspects if his involvement with the magazine had been more direct, the combative atmosphere might have ameliorated. This is one case where the human details behind print achievement actually belittle the work, rather than offering insights into what was accomplished. A reader genuinely interested in the real importance of Artforum might do well to simply read back issues. The personalities here interfere too much with the transmission of ideas. The book has plenty of good content and summarises the ITIL framework well, but without an index it is not useful as a reference book. Perhaps if it was in electronic format to allow searching this should not represent a problem.

A Story To Boost Your Spirits

If you're looking for a quick story to boost your holiday spirits, LET IT SNOW by Debbie Macomber is perfect.

Narrator Sarah Grace does an excellent job giving voices to the characters and bringing the magical story to life. Her cadence will draw you in and hold you spellbound as the story unfolds.

Shelly Griffin is excited to visit with her dad during Christmas even if she does have to fly. When her plane is rerouted from Seattle to Portland, Shelly decides to rent a car and drive the rest of the way home.

Slade Gardner has an important business meeting he must attend in Seattle. When the plane is delayed due to bad weather, he decides to rent a car and drive.

Shelly and Slade encounter a problem as there's only one car left. While they had flown on the same plane and not spoken, they agree to share the car. The trip to Shelly's dad's proves to be an eye opener for both travelers. Once they arrive, the weather takes another nasty turn and the travelers end up spending more time together.

LET IT SNOW is a heartwarming story of two people meeting by chance and changing the course of their lives forever. Author Debbie Macomber makes the characters realistic with flaws and fun quirks. The story is fast pace and will capture your attention until the end.

Great Information in Book! Sometimes Hard to Understand

I bought this book for one of my college classes. This book tries to help teach you about many different complex tax concepts and gain an understanding of today's ever-changing tax legislation. This book is very comprehensive because the further you read into it, everything build on itself. If you don't understand the beginning things in the book, you are going to have a hard time understanding the rest of the book. Don't get me wrong, this book is a very effective solution for helping you try to understand individual taxation, C corporations, taxes on financial statements, and flow-through.

Some things that I found super helpful in this book are the ""Big Picture"" examples, memorable tax scenarios, and ""What If?"" case variations, clarify some concepts taught in this book.

One of the best books on the physics and theory of sail & trim

One of the best books I've ever bought on the physics and theory of sail trimming. I leant this book to a few of my friends and they ended up buying their own copies for them selves. The math is not a requirement to reading this book it is just use the back up some statements.
It is pretty easy reading and if you're not a constant sailor you will probably end up reading this again and again throughout the years to jog your memory.

If you really want to understand

If you really want to understand sailing and what makes the boat go through the water and why this is the book. Its not a light bedtime read. You do have to think about what is being said and explained but the explanations are complete enough to appeal to an engineer (as myself) yet presented with enough discussion that a non-engineer with an interest in the details can enjoy it as well. Although the equations and formulas are given, you don't need to know sophisticated math to understand. Its not a cookbook to sail faster but if you apply the material presented here, you cannot but sail faster, better and more efficiently.

First, while despair involves the absence of hope, a rejection of oneself, and a turn away from one's relation to God, despair is fundamentally an unwillingness to hope. This unwillingness is directed toward authentic hope, conceived of by Kierkegaard as an expectation for the possibility of the good. Second, hope is not simply an ancillary activity of the self; rather, the task of becoming a self is essentially constituted by hope. To be in despair, and therefore, to be unwilling to hope, is in fact to reject the task of becoming a self. Third, faith stands in opposition to despair precisely because it is a willingness to hope. An essential role of faith is to secure the ground for hope, and in this way faith secures the ground for the self. In short, authentic hope-what Kierkegaard calls spiritual hope-is not merely a fringe element, but is essential to Kierkegaard's project of the self.
