Dugard of Rouen: French Trade to Canada and the West Indies, 1729-1770, by Dale Miquelon

In 1953 the proprietor of the chateau of Bonneval at La Haye-Aubre par Routot in the Norman department of Eure presented the French National Archives with a collection of eighteenth-century papers. They had been brought to the chateau by previous owners at the time of the French Revolution. The proprietor was unrelated to these shadowy figures, and the papers concerned neither his family nor the estate. Now deposited at the Archives Nationales in Paris, the 45 cartons of letters and business papers tell the story of the business activities of the Dugard family of Rouen. The earliest item in the collection is a bill of exchange dated 3 January 1658/59, and the last letter is from 1794. Most of the papers concern Roben Dugard, 1704-70, and a number of companies formed by him and several other Rouen merchants, among them the societ du Canada. Dugard and Company, as the societ may be called with less formality, was founded in 1729 to exploit the trade of Canada with France and the West Indies. Soon it directed its attention to the development of a Franco-Caribbean trade independent of its North-Atlantic commerce. The present history is a case study of a business partnership. The size and structure of eighteenth-century French business enterprises, the nature of French business finance, methods and maritime insurance, French commodities of trade and markets, and the relation of French business to government are all examined. So too is the manner and extent of the penetration of French business into Canada and the West Indies.

Lessons on diction, detail, figurative language, imagery, syntax, and tone help middle and early high school students understand the concept of voice in what they read and develop a strong, personal voice in their own writing. Each voice lesson takes only 10-20 minutes to complete and includes a quotation selected from a wide range of literature, two discussion questions, and an exercise that encourages students to practice what they have learned about the elements of voice. Discovering Voice also offers a collection of quotations students can use to create their own voice lessons. Discussion suggestions for each voice lesson and additional activities for teaching voice further promote critical analysis. Each of the seven packs on the elements of voice diction, detail, figurative language 1 (metaphors, similes, and personification), figurative language 2 (hyperboles, symbols, and irony), imagery, syntax, and tone include an introduction, lessons with discussion questions and an exercise, write-your-own voice lessons, a list of additional activities for teaching voice, and discussion suggestions."

A MUST have for any English or Language Arts Teacher!
By Adam Booth
I have little to say except this is the single most useful book I have ever used in teaching English. It is comprehensive, simple, fast, and engaging. The lessons written within provide an outlet for an array of intelligences. If you ever wanted to teach your kids about figurative language or about syntax, or diction, simply using these 20 minute lesson plans will do it. My students have gone from not knowing what a verb is, to not only identifying the literal and figurative term in a metaphor, but using them in their own writing. It has made a difference in my students learning.

Voice in Middle School Poetry
By Teacher Julie
This is my first year teaching 6th grade language arts (or language arts in general, for that matter), and I began the year most nervous about teaching poetry. I mean, I enjoy poetry, but I've never really been taught how to read poetry, at least not in a deep way. I had ideas for teaching some of the techniques used in poetry (like similes, methaphors, and personification), but I didn't know how to read a poem and analyze it in any meaningful way. (And if I didn't know, how was I going to teach my students?)

To make myself feel better, I went online and purchased several books to help me teach poetry, including Discovering Voice. Of all the books I bought, this was BY FAR the best at giving me ideas for teaching the specific aspects of writing (diction, syntax, etc.). While the book does not focus specifially on poetry, the activities can easily be incorporated into a poetry unit. So far, I've only used a couple of the activities with my students, but all of them have worked very well. I especially liked the Introduction to Voice activities at the begining of the book, and my students really enjoyed relating voice in poetry to voice in art and music (which they are much more interested in at this point in their lives). I would definately recommmend this book for anyone who is interested in deepening their student's study of poetry.

Great book!
By GA Teacher
I have been using this book with my 8th grade honors Literature class. We have really gotten a lot out of it. Each lesson takes about 5-10 minutes to complete, and about every other week we discuss several of them. They do one most days. At one point we read several Mark Twain short stories and the students wrote essays about Twain's voice. I was very impressed. I would definitely buy this book again!

Proven To Be True By Declassified Documents

Hitler was a known evil for the world as early as 1922. Western powers and western corporations loved Hitler and were not at all disturbed by his vile racist hatreds. Every year that passes, there is more and more evidence of specific U.S. collaboration with Hitler and his Nazi underlings. Recently released documents demonstrate beyond any doubt that U.S. complicity post-WWII was far greater than anyone at first was willing to admit and now there can be no denial. Not only did the U.S. collaborate with Nazi racists and war criminals but also some of the most prominent and destructive medical experimenters ever known to humankind. The U.S. helped them escape Europe and hide in various places in the United States and South America. Higham's work is only limited by the documents then available, no doubt his works could be expanded a hundred fold today.

Find look at the Nazi/Fascist forces at work before, during, and after WW2. Fascism is alive and well in the United States today and elsewhere in the world, including the U/S/ backed Ukrainian regime. The far right is expected to make large gains in the upcoming EU elections, Very chilly. 4 1/2 Stars !

The Parent-Child Dance: Strategies and Techniques for Staying One Step Ahead, by Ronald A. Kotkin PhD, Aubrey H. Fine EdD

A unique manual to raising a child—for parents everywhere—using the metaphor of dance to provide expert, comforting advice.

Having children and raising a family should be the greatest joy in one’s life, but it is a role that requires tremendous responsibility and patience. As parents, our job is to provide a strong foundation for our children, so that they can eventually grow up to become self-sufficient adults. However, just like everything in life, all children are different, some requiring more support than others and to varying degrees over time. Parenting is like a dance between parent and child. The more seamless the movements, the more graceful the interaction. When a parent takes the lead or decides to share, over time with practice, the dance can be smooth and effortless.

Nevertheless, when the child is unintentionally allowed to take the lead, the parent-child dance may appear more rocky and unstable. This often occurs when the parent is unclear and at odds with their role. The ensuing battle for the lead may cause disharmony in the relationship and the dance. Parenting is a lifelong commitment that takes patience, thoughtfulness, and skill. The Parent-Child Dance is designed to explain the concept of the dance and act as a catalyst for encouraging parents to begin their journey in making positive changes in their child’s life. Parents will recognize the scenarios and gain insight through humorous examples and step-by-step strategies to avoid disharmony.

Review
The Parent-Child Dance: Strategies and Techniques for Staying One Step Ahead is an outstanding guide for parents wanting to improve their child’s behavior. Clearly the product of seasoned clinicians, this remarkable book provides unique insights into why parenting can go awry and what parents can do to change it. This book is chock-full of state-of-the-art, research-supported, practical strategies for improving child behavior. Detailed parent and child perspectives about the strategies, culled from years of experience using them with families, powerfully illustrate for parents how and why they work. There are many books about parenting, but the Parent-Child Dance stands out by empowering parents to use these proven approaches. This is an invaluable resource for parents and their children.

The “Parent Child Dance,” is a wonderful metaphor for the complex, often mysterious, deeply rewarding, and always surprising relationship between parent and child. In this masterful and important book, authors Aubrey Fine and Ron Kotkin provide richly descriptive insights into the varied dimensions of the parent-child “dance.” From motivation techniques to managing sibling rivalries, transitioning from childhood to adolescence, and creating positive family environments, the Parent Child Dance moves the reader metaphorically through the jitterbugging improvisation of early childhood to the frenetic rock n’ rolling teenage years. In a book designed for anyone who is, has been, or aspires to be a parent, Fine and Kotkin help us understand how to more effectively synchronize the “dance steps” of responsible parenting with those of our ever evolving and constantly changing children. A must read--I guarantee you’ll sleep better at night!

As a pediatrician, I see many parents who struggle to find an effective approach to their children's behavioral challenges. Kotkin and Fine have written a book that provides an articulate road map; one filled with the strategies and ideas that will help them effectively lead their children in the dance of life. I strongly recommend this book to all parents who are looking for a creative and effective approach to parenting.

PARENT CHILD DANCE overflows with a realistic optimism about making positive changes in a child’s life as a way of bringing the family closer together. Brimming with proven strategies, with insights into how children relate to their parents, and why, this provocative book written by two experienced therapists offers every parent much-needed encouragement and support as they learn to choreograph their own family life.

It's not often that a book with practical suggestions about how to improve parenting skills gets me laughing out loud. But that's what I did as I read the Parent Child Dance. For each typical toe stepping mistake parents commonly make, the authors take us into the typical unspoken thoughts going on in the child's mind. The section on how parents model what children learn brought me back to a highway, my son behind the wheel, the car going too fast for my comfort level and my son reminding me that it was my driving that gave his body a certain feel for how the rubber meets the road. This book will help you dance better to enjoy the dance.

“The Parent-Child Dance” is a vital addition to every parent’s toolbox. Through “dance” steps that even those of us with two left feet can follow, Drs. Kotkin and Fine provide a practical, compassionate, and humorous array of techniques designed to connect the parent and child through self-reflection and mutual respect. The result is a stronger parent-child bond that allows the entire family to thrive in an atmosphere of consistency and calm. I wish this book had been available when my husband and I were raising our three sons.

This practical easy-to-use guidebook is perfect for families who need help to transform their dance with their children into one that is smooth and harmonious!"

--Sue Schecter Keir, M.S. Education

I like the dance metaphor employed in the book. Both parent and child need to work together, and the child shouldn't take the lead, just as in dancing, because if two people are leading, it causes disharmony. The book offers many suggestions for children of all age levels, including family-friendly activities and discussion points to help strengthen the family as a whole. One tidbit not often included in parenting books—choosing a pet, not just for family-friendly aspects or cuteness, but to actually help enhance family dynamics as well.

--Motherhood Blog

Wow, if you’re looking for a must have parenting book for your personal library, this is the book! Authors Ronald Kotkin and Aubrey Fine have put their combined fifty five years of experience to talk to you about a dance we are participate in with our children everyday, The Parent Child Dance.
As parents, we want to create healthy loving relationships with our children and we want them to grow up and be happy, self sufficient and strong. However, this is a delicate task and we have to be aware. Wisdom and empathy fill this book as we work with the authors to strengthen our “dance steps”.

I didn't purchase this at Amazon, but I found it an insightful read, full of practical ideas and tips on how to handle a wide range of issues. One of the things I appreciate the most is how they include parent and child thoughts side-by-side. It's a window into the mind of each and illustrates where communication can break down. My daughter is two and I'll be coming back to this book again as she grows older.

Helpful to parents and family therapists
By Irene A.Brady
In The Parent-Child Dance, Kotkin and Fine, have written a book that will be very helpful to both parents and family therapists. It presents a clear and yet comprehensive approach to positive parenting that is easily understood and can be incorporated into any family system. This book would be especially useful as a resource for parents participating in a parenting group as required reading prior to each group session.

Playing at the World, by Jon Peterson

Explore the conceptual origins of wargames and role-playing games in this unprecedented history of simulating the real and the impossible. From a vast survey of primary sources ranging from eighteenth-century strategists to modern hobbyists, Playing at the World distills the story of how gamers first decided fictional battles with boards and dice, and how they moved from simulating wars to simulating people. The invention of role-playing games serves as a touchstone for exploring the ways that the literary concept of character, the lure of fantastic adventure and the principles of gaming combined into the signature cultural innovation of the late twentieth century.

Extensive, comprehensive, fascinating
By Dylan Horrocks
At some point in the late 60s and early 70s a handful of young wargaming geeks in Wisconsin and Minnesota - almost by accident - found a new way to create and explore imaginary worlds, realities and lives. It was like nothing they'd experienced before, bringing pleasures and excitements far beyond anything people normally associated with "gaming." In a few short years, this new immersive fantasy experience spread from these tiny local wargame clubs to become an international phenomenon that changed the world.

Playing at the World is a study of the creation of Dungeons & Dragons (first published in 1974), and the birth of fantasy role-playing games. Like a methodical archaeologist, Peterson painstakingly uncovers D&D's origins in the theory and subculture of wargaming, in fantasy literature and fandom, and in the wider social context and subcultures of 1960s-70s America. For anyone interested in role-playing games (as a cultural phenomenon and as a narrative/world-simulation form), this book is an inexhaustible treasure trove of information and insights. The depth of Peterson's research is extraordinary and his prose style is confident and enjoyable (and the presentation, editing and design prove that self-publishing is no barrier to absolute professionalism). It's true that some casual readers may be put off by the (deliciously nerdy) comprehensiveness (Peterson is determined to identify and analyse every conceivable source for and influence on D&D's development), but for someone genuinely fascinated by the subject, that is merely another of the book's many pleasures.

But looking beyond the breadth and detail, there are plenty of important larger themes here, which Peterson does a better job of exploring than almost anyone else I've read on the topic. I've long felt that the rise of Dungeons & Dragons was a significant turning point in the culture: a shift in the content, structure and uses of fiction. D&D coalesced various emerging trends and brought them together to provide an imaginary experience that was immersive, exploratory and interactive - in effect providing a template for many of the wider cultural developments since. It offered a new kind of relationship to fictional stories and realities, one that I often think has come to dominate the contemporary world.

Peterson sees this too, and underlying much of this book is his search for a deeper understanding of what made such a shift possible and of what it might mean. He undertakes that search not by making sweeping generalisations or launching into academic cultural theory, but by methodically and fastidiously sifting through the detail: who said, wrote and did what when? And why? What did this mean to the people involved at the time? How was all this shaped by the context (both at the micro level of the Lake Geneva and Twin Cities wargaming scene of the early 70s, and also at the macro level of 1970s America)? Along the way - often in very quiet, subtle ways - Peterson draws out some rich and intriguing connections, resonances, meanings. I love this kind of historiography, where broad themes and profound insights emerge out of a careful nuanced reading of complex concrete factual details. It sometimes demands a degree of patient effort on the part of the reader but the rewards can be tremendous.

Add to that the pleasures of nostalgia (of which there's plenty to be enjoyed here) and personal drama (albeit less than some might like, thanks to Peterson's determination to be judicious and fair and avoid gossip), and Playing at the World is one of the most satisfying books I've read in a while. It was clearly an enormous task, and I'm very grateful to Peterson for what he has achieved. There will be more books by other authors on the invention of D&D, and there will be many more insights and pleasures to be enjoyed. But we should count ourselves lucky indeed to have such a thorough, carefully-researched, solidly written and thoughtful book among the first.

P.S. If Playing at the World leaves you hungry for more, Peterson also maintains a hugely enjoyable blog which extends his research into the minutiae of RPG history: [...]

You don't need to have played D&D to enjoy this book
By Ohio Reader
I've never seen the game or played D&D, but am immensely interested in the intellectual and social history, development, and future evolution of successful simulation games. This book had me irrevocably hooked after the very accessible preface/forward/intro and 2 chapters. Very readable, both new and rescued in-depth content, respect for the subject and the reader. Since others have already adequately and accurately reviewed the quality of the information included, I can only add, that even if you're not a D&D player, this book is a don't miss scholarly work about game development, and as important to me, a quite enjoyable read.

Great bit of Gaming Archeology!
By Steven Frank Zieser
A great book about the start of role playing games, and a fantastic look at war gaming from which it arose. Painstakingly researched from nigh impossible to find war gaming newsletters and zines, you get a real sense of how D&D was conceived at how it rose to the popularity it enjoyed in the late 70’s-early 80’s. There are some chapters that get fairly dry and technical, but the author himself is aware of this and warns the reader that if they don't want this info, they can skip to a later chapter.

Any old D&D player will dig this.

Review
"The universe of Sapkowski's The Witcher is one of the most detailed and best-explored in modern fantasy, offering endless opportunities for fresh ideas ... Complex character relationships enrich this already complex world; this is the sort of series fantasy fans will cherish."―B&N

"One of the best and most interesting fantasy series I've ever read. Though it functions well as adventure fiction, it has added depth and value as satire and commentary on fantasy literature ... Sapkowski is a genuine stylist."―Nerds of a Feather

"Like a complicated magic spell, a Sapkowski novel is a hodgepodge of fantasy, intellectual discourse, and dry humor. Recommended."―Time

"Like Mieville and Gaiman, [Sapkowski] takes the old and makes it new ... fresh take on genre fantasy."―Foundation on The Last Wish

"A breath of fresh air in a well-worn genre. Don't miss it!"―Dreamwatch

"Sapkowski has a phenomenal gift for narrative, inventing sensational events, creating a suggestive mood, and building up the suspense along with a dazzling, slightly cynical sense of humor."―Jacek Sieradzki, Polityka on The Last Wish

"Sapkowski's The Last Wish is a great collection of short stories centered around a witcher, Geralt - a rare sorcerous breed who hunts down the monstrous but is feared by the innocent. With a wondrous mix of Eastern European folklore and myth, beautiful princesses, mischievous demons and where all is not as it seems, The Last Wish is a great read - perfect for dipping into or just reading cover to cover, as I did."―Waterstones

"It is [his] world-weariness combined with his battle-honed powers that make Geralt such an interesting character. Here's hoping The Last Wish is merely the opening chapter in his English language adventures."―Edge

"I really, really enjoyed this book ... None of the characters in Sapkowski's world are black or white; they are all shades of grey, including Geralt and the monsters."―The Deckled Edge

"Sapkowski is very good at creating interesting, imaginative characters with unusual levels of depth to them ... The Last Wish is an enjoyable book full of stories both melancholy and comic."―The Wertzone

"This beautifully written character-based story from Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski ... a refreshing champion."―The Specusphere

"New battle mechanics, a fantastic storyline, and a gritty setting make The Witcher one of the most engrossing, mature RPGs to arrive on the PC in years."―Gamespot.com on The Witcher video game

"The Witcher delivers one of the most intense and rewarding role-playing experiences this year."―GT Reviews on The Witcher video game

An Excellent Read
By Andrew Jeffreys
After a very long wait (seven years), we finally have the official English translation of the second set of short stories about Geralt of Rivia. Why the publisher waited so long to translate this collection is beyond me, as The Sword of Destiny introduces some very important characters to the next book: Blood of Elves. However, that's a discussion for another day.

The Sword of Destiny is similar to its prequel collection, The Last Wish. It's a series of short stories about Geralt, one of the last Witchers (a guild of monster hunters), and his many adventures. Unlike the The Last Wish, all the stories are in a fairly linear order and deal mostly with the topic of destiny. They also build on Geralt's relationships and what it means to be human.

Whereas The Last Wish dealt more with philosophy that is grounded in real life, The Sword of Destiny concerns itself it the philosophy of destiny and is more rooted in a traditional fantasy story. For a while, I thought the story would take a clichd approach to destiny, but was pleasantly surprised by how the author chose to tackle it.

This book is an excellent read if you enjoy medieval fantasy and a must-read if you're a fan of the Witcher series.

Is it good? Oh yes
By asymon
This is long awaited second book with short stories, where author continues creating world and weaving plots. It contains "Something more", story that should be read before Witcher saga, "Blood of Elves" and so on...

Is it good? Oh yes, you won't be dissapointed, it's not another Tolkien-high-fantasy clone, I hope it's not lost in translation (I read original, Polish version).

An amazing collection of short stories
By Amazon Customer
"Not this war, Geralt. After this war, no-one returns. There will be nothing to return to. Nilfgaard leaves behind it only rubble; its armies advance like lava from which no-one escapes. The roads are strewn, for miles, with gallows and pyres; the sky is cut with columns of smoke as long as the horizon. Since the beginning of the world, in fact, nothing of this sort has happened before. Since the world is our world... You must understand that the Nilfgaardians have descended from their mountains to destroy this world."

The Sword of Destiny is the sequel to the Witcher's first collection, The Last Wish, picking up where the previous book left off. The continuity is surprisingly fluid with the stories being surprisingly interlinked and best read in the order that they are published. The Sword of Destiny is also absolutely essential to understanding the later novels in the series, which is unusual when dealing with short stories.

The Sword of Destiny is also surprising in that it contains some of the lightest and darkest of the Witcher universe slammed together in one volume. There's stories which include silly stories about Medieval stock market manipulation and a retelling of The Little Mermaid alongside tales of genocide as well as forced relocation of native peoples. This is a really impressive display of the variety of Andrzej Sapkowski's work.

I'm particularly fascinated by the character development of Geralt, new character Ciri of Cintra, and the Nilfgaardian Empire. Geralt gets expanded from The Man With No Name with swords, basically, to a man who is deeply suffering for his inability to find love. Ciri of Cintra is one of the rare non-annoying children in fiction, rivaling Newt from Aliens for how much I like her. The Nilfgaardian Empire? Well, they are an embodiment of evil who don't get much screen-time but manage to be both believable and terrifying at once. I started the review with the quote about them because, truly, it gave me chills.

The supporting cast in the book is particularly strong this time around as well. The tragic but wonderful character of Essi Daven, the snobbish but enjoyable Istredd, the self-confident but heartbroken Yennefer, the imperious Calanthe, and (of course) Dandelion are all characters who fly off the page despite their little screen-time. I'll go into more detail but, really, I should address each of the stories individually.

"Limit of Possibility"

This is a deconstruction of the dragon-slaying epics which we all know, even if we've never seen them outside of The Hobbit. Geralt of Rivia is the one professional monster slayer in the surrounding kingdoms who isn't interested in killing a dragon when a prince puts up a fabulous reward for slaying one. This attracts a holy knight, a wizard more interested in saving one than killing one, a would-be peasant hero, and some cold-blooded mercenaries. The fact the dragon is an intelligent individual who may be the last of its kind on the Continent doesn't effect their motivations one bit.

This story picks up on Geralt and Yennefer's relationship immediately after The Last Wish.
Geralt, apparently, abandoned her soon after the story which did not sit well with Yennefer in the slightest. This is one of her best appearances as she gives some truly staggering justifications to convince herself that it's alright to kill the dragons for her very personal selfish reasons. It's a humorous, silly, and yet surprisingly well-written and observant story.

"Splinter of Ice"

This is not really a typical Witcher story in that while it has a few nods to being an deconstruction of The Snow Queen, it's actually a romance about Geralt and Yennefer. Well, actually it's only a romance in it's an analysis of how the two (actually three as Geralt finds out) are deeply dysfunctional people who have difficulty loving or being loved. Both Yennefer and Geralt have terrible self-esteem as it turns out, which effects their ability to say how much they care for one another.

I like this story's surprisingly unglamorous portrayal of Geralt and Yennefer's romance, which is how these things sometimes go. Yennefer is constantly cheating on Geralt while he isn't all that much better, not the least bit because he won't really identify what it is they have. The introduction of Istredd is excellent as he is a character who really would be better off seeking anyone else than Yennefer but wants her anyway. Despite some truly nasty things he says to Geralt, you also get the impression he's not that different from our hero.

"Eternal Fire"

A comedy about economics, identity theft, and assimilation in a Medieval city. Geralt and Dandelion find themselves bankrupt (again) in the city of Novigrad. Going to visit a halfling friend of theirs, they find that he's been replaced with a mischievous doppler who has stolen all of the man's wealth. Joining with their friend, who has escaped imprisonment, they proceed to chase the doppler around the city only to find out he's built a veritable economic empire in just a few short weeks. Much discussion is had about the definition of monster and what kind of opportunities we allow the disadvantaged.

I got a lot of fun out of this story since I read it while playing the Novigrad section of the Witcher 3. The doppler character, Dudu, really impresses me with his statement about how arbitrary the rules of society can be. Dudu would very much love a chance to live amongst "normal" people but he's forbidden it because of an accident of birth. This is perhaps the lightest story in the whole of the Witcher series and is quite enjoyable as a comedic romp.

"A Little Sacrifice"

The final "humorous" story in this collection, A Little Sacrifice is a re-telling of The Little Mermaid with a Lovecraftian twist. Geralt and Dandelion find themselves bankrupt (notice a theme?) and the latter is forced to be the backup entertainment at a wedding. This is after as disastrous attempt by Geralt to try and serve as a go-betweener for a Duke with his mermaid sweetheart. Once there, they meet a young rival of Dandelion's who Geralt swiftly develops feelings for.

A Little Sacrifice is much like Splinter of Ice in that it's more a story about love and relationships than the supernatural. While the Little Mermaid parody is hilarious, it's really mostly about Geralt's relationship with Essi Daven and how he could find love with a woman other than Yennefer (but doesn't want to). The ending is touching, even if it's a bit hard on the mermaid. I also like the random inclusion of Deep Ones in the setting.

"Sword of Destiny"

The Sword of Destiny is the first story to really have a heavy focus on the myth arc of the Witcher as well as set up the events of Something Greater. Geralt goes into a Dryad-filled forest in order to carry a treaty offer from a nearby king. The Dryad race is dying out but they would prefer to go down fighting than watch their lands turned into lumber except for a tiny section. Meanwhile, Geralt stumbles across the lost Princess of Cintra, Ciri, who has the potential to change his destiny forever.

There's a lot of heavy subtext about native displacement, extinction, racism, and the problem of cohabitation looking a lot like surrender. There's no good answers here and the ending is ambiguous. Ciri's presence is, however, adorable and I loved her deconstruction of arranged marriages as well as the runaway princess trope. We also get a lot of foreshadowing for where their story will go next.

"Something Greater"

Something Greater is, hands down, the best of Sapkowski's short stories. It's powerful, emotional, dramatic, and tension-filled. The fact it's mostly about Geralt recovering from a horrible injury sustained fighting run-of-the-mill bandits belabors the point that it is a well-written story about loss as well as the horrors of war. Geralt struggles with the idea that his mother may be dead without ever having met her or that Yennefer might die on some battlefield somewhere. He also struggles with the fact he has no legacy since he rejected the possibility of taking Ciri as his child/apprentice.

The introduction of Nilfgaard is truly horrific and done extremely well. In a world as horrible and filled with suffering as the Northern kingdoms, they are something worse and come to bring an end to the old way of life (as well as possibly its people). The destruction of Cintra is one of the most harrowing short bits of fiction I've read.

Bravo, Andrzej!

I recommend this book strongly. It's got humor, drama, action, character insight, tragedy, and wonder. Is it the best fantasy I've ever read? No. However, it's up there. For the short story format, the author manages to really crank out some wonders.
