Why had it seen fit to summon this young African girl, scarcely eighteen years old, before it?” This group of ‘the most respectable Characters in Boston,’ as it would later define itself, had assembled to question closely the African adolescent on the slender sheaf of poems that she claimed to have ‘written by herself.’” This young “African girl” was Phillis Wheatley. “The Trial of Phillis Wheatley” is a courtroom drama because it “depicts” what happened in the Governor’s Council Chamber room that day. However, as important as she is to our history and to the drama, the play is not just about Phillis. The play is also about the men in that room and the test that they were facing. The test of overcoming their own prejudices to be willing to put their signature on a document attesting that this African household slave of John and Susannah Wheatley had written a number of poems compiled in a small manuscript. A Negro slave author was a phenomenon that was unique to these men, to Boston, and to a young America. Only if the largely older and all white men in that room were willing to put their names to this attestation would this manuscript have a chance of being published. The consequences of this action for these men were possible ridicule, and the threat of physical violence from an external force, the Boston gang, under the leadership of Ebenezer Mackintosh, street brawler and charismatic leader of the South End Gang. The final verdict would change American History.

About the Author
Ronald Wheatley is the author of the award winning historical novel "A Song of Africa," that was inspired by his experience as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Nigeria, West Africa. He is an attorney and student of history and a member of the Massachusetts Sons of the American Revolution. He served in Vietnam with the US Army's 1st Signal Brigade, 1967-1968.

New View on Life

I am 21 years old, and I was never a reader. All throughout high school I refused to read books for pleasure, I even refused to read the mandatory reading assignments. Also, I never made it past my first semester of college. However, I recently picked this book up out of curiosity. This book has totally changed my view on literature and value of education. Instead of coming home after work and sitting down and watching movie after movie, my new desire is to read a good book. Thankfully, "The Trial of Phillis Wheatley", has turned that routine around for me. Now, I want to read more often than watch television, I now want to read more to further my knowledge on subjects like history. I recommend this book to everyone, readers or not. Thank You Ronald Wheatley for this beautiful piece of art.

Must read historical book

The story of Phyllis Wheatley is presented by the author in a theatrical manner that made me feel as though I was actually present when Phyllis was challenged to prove the authorship of her poems because of her race. I became totally immersed in the issues of the times experiencing the tension of blacks verses whites, England verses America and the Colonial debates over British rule, abolition and taxation. Remarkably the Wheatley family did not treat Phyllis as a slave rather, they recognized and nurtured her talent and provided unprecedented education in literature. Without their generosity of spirit and the support of one of our Founding Fathers, John Hancock, America would not have been gifted with talents of our country’s first published black poet. I heartily recommend this book. The story was riveting, the writing artful, and the reader was left desiring more. Thank you for writing this wonderful book!

An Amazing Woman

Ronald Wheatley takes readers back before the American Revolution to introduce us to a young woman slave, who is both genius and poet. I had not heard of her and was so pleased to read about the first published African American woman poet. Through his characters, Wheatley's book expresses both British as well as American viewpoints and his writing reveals the delicate, worried emotions of the soft spoken slave. The author gives lots of data about those turbulent times before the play begins.

About the Author
Richard Guare, PhD, is Director of the Center for Learning and Attention Disorders in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Dr. Guare's research and publications focus on the understanding and treatment of learning and attention difficulties. He is a neuropsychologist and board-certified behavior analyst who frequently consults to schools and agencies. With Peg Dawson, he is coauthor of bestselling books for general readers, including Smart but Scattered, Smart but Scattered Teens, and The Smart but Scattered Guide to Success (with a focus on adults). Drs. Guare and Dawson are also coauthors of The Work-Smart Academic Planner, Revised Edition, and books for professionals including Executive Skills in Children and Adolescents, Second Edition.

Peg Dawson, EdD, is a staff psychologist at the Center for Learning and Attention Disorders in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where she works with children and adults. Dr. Dawson is a past president of the New Hampshire Association of School Psychologists, the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), and the International School Psychology Association, and a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from NASP. Excellent resource for parents of teens with ADHD or ADD

As a clinical psychologist I regard this as one of the best resources for parents of teens. This helps parents to look at the teen with ADHD as having some executive skills impairments that need remediation and understanding. Parents also rate their own executive skills and can try to be a better fit in parenting these adolescents. There are many constructive suggestions in this book and I highly recommend it.

Excellent look at the unusual child

I have a kid who's gifted & in gifted classes. Understands high level concepts, but can't figure out how to organize his locker or manage to turn in his homework - even though he's completed it. It's been bandied about maybe he has autism or ADD, but those didn't fit. This book describes him to a T. Not having the frontal lobe of his brain maturing at the same rate as his peers is a simple, logical explanation & the ensuing ways to deal are enlightening & helpful. This book was a god-send. It was suggested by his gifted teacher after she spent time with him.

The best part was when the author brought up the point that we may see thier deficits and want to help our teens improve, but if they don't see it as a problem, or necessarily even want our help, it's never going to work. Excellent advice to keep in mind as we work WITH teens, not against.

These prompts that make you THINK

If you've been wanting to start journaling but just haven't - This is PERFECT for journaling motivation, and the questions really elicit comprehensive thought and emotions to come out in my journaling "answers." I used to keep a diary as a kid and have come across a few of those old journals lately. That's combined with me MEANING to take the time to journal as an Adult.. have been meaning to for a solid 10 years... This book finally got me in motion and reaping the benefits again of 1) getting things off your chest 2) With the prompts, I found myself recognizing things I'm grateful for in my life, which was unexpected and wonderful 3) Being able to look back a year, five years, etc. and see how things have changed.. see patterns that would have gone unnoticed if I hadn't journaled.. see the things that have not changed and SHOULD.
I recommend this book for both adults and teenagers. It's a thoughtful gift - whether to yourself or to someone else. :-)

The allure of concrete5 is the promise of an easier time making those darned pages of content for your website. concrete5 implements the use of templates, which it calls blocks. Related to this is 'page types'. The book is geared for the programmer already well versed in PHP.

For you, there is a considerable set of code snippet examples. These should be straightforward to understand and quick to type. Plus, you might well be tempted to experiment with altering the code. And you should. It can be best to regard the examples in the text as a jumping off point for you to learn about the limits of concrete5.

concrete5 draws a distinction between page types and blocks. The latter are still small, but the emphasis is on the visual layout. Importantly, you can easily define your own block types from scratch. The book shows how. It frees you from being confined to the default block types in concrete5. Also note that the functionality of blocks is greatly enhanced by the ability to embed javascript. Since javascript itself has increased in power in recent years, you should be able to appreciate the possibilities this opens up.

Chapter 5 starts to go into deeper issues of integration. Where you have a back end database server. The examples in this chapter illustrate using the database to populate your web pages. But also going from user input on those pages back to the database. A cautionary note is given about guarding against SQL injection. The latter is a dangerous probe against your database and is well known to crackers.

Ensure you purchase only The Complete Classic Text or one that is totally based on the Original text Published in1937

Finding a true original version of Think and Grow Rich has been a major challenge. Some of the Mass Market Paperbacks produced are not complete for example Wilder Publications 2007 has the following;

Pg113 "before Lord Cornwall is surrendered" - Should be "before Lord Cornwallis surrendered

Pg 115 "penalties of an Mt of Henry VIII" - Should be "of an Act of Henry VIII"

Pg 119 "The habit of decisions acquired" Should be "The habit of indecision acquired". This one is critical as the context of the message is completety changed with the wrong word.

All I can add further is that "Think and Grow Rich - The Complete Classic Text" published by Tarcher Peguin & "Think and Grow Rich The Orginal Classic" published by Capstone seem to be the original text based on the 1937 edition.

Hope this helps others as it has been extremely frustrating studying this great book and finding errors in the print etc.

There are many different versions of this classic book available for download here on amazon. As a matter of fact I had purchased a different kindle version of this book and was about 25% of the way through it when I came across this version. I was intrigued by the offer of 'included audio files' for each chapter, so I thought 'what the heck' and spent the .99 to download this version as well. Well, WOW, I'm glad I did! I REALLY enjoy reading the chapter and then listening to that same chapter being read to me by Shawn Penning ... who has one of the nicest voices I've yet to hear read to me (and I listen to 'lots' of audiobooks!). I wish he could read my entire collection to me. :-) Anyway, this particular kindle book/audio is excellent and I intend on 'gifting' this product to quite a few of my friends.

When I was reading through some of the other reviewers comments I noticed that some had remarked that there were problems with the formatting. I read my kindle books on my laptop, my desktop, and on my iPhone. I have opened this book on all three and the formatting is perfect ... so perhaps if there was a problem originally, it has since been corrected.

For fellow customers who might need a little help with the audio files:
If you want to download/save all of the audio files to your computer, do this:
1) find your way to the very END of the book (that is where you will find the links to the audio files)
2) click the 1st link (eg.:Think And Grow Rich Chap 1 HQ )... this will cause a browser window to open and a little audio player app will appear in the middle of the screen and the mp3 should begin to play. Place your cursor over top of the area with the long horizontal bar with the dot that moves to the right as the audio plays *right-click* your mouse. You should see the option: Save as... Click that and save the file to your computer. Then go back to your kindle book, click the next link and repeat the steps until you have saved all of the audio files.

Agile Done Right!!!!

I was excited to see that Mr. Ambler was working on Disciplined Agile Delivery (DAD) and was looking forward to this book. One of the biggest challenges I have is that most of the successful agile teams I interact with are isolated small teams using Scrum out of the box. It is working on the projects that have small teams with small scope, usually building one application in isolation. They don't have to be concerned with enterprise level integration.

The small successful teams I have seen also do no architecture. Although the end result is exactly what you do not want for high modifiability, they simply get it live. Usually a little buggy and slow, but they make it live nevertheless.

That is not true of all the projects I interact with. There are some large enterprise wide Scrum initiatives. The successful ones brought in an external Scrum coach to train them. Because of the complexity of the project they were also forced to do architecture and design. They ended up back at more of an iterative process. By the time they were done modifying the Scrum process, beside some Scrum names, they were much closer to the Unified Process than Scrum.

Until now my primary resource for information, that I also consider good information, implementing agile practices at an enterprise level has been Scaled Agile Framework. It is completely covered in the book Agile Software Requirements: Lean Requirements Practices for Teams, Programs, and the Enterprise. The Scaled Agile Framework is great,but I am glad to have this second resource!!! The attempts to sell Scrum of Scrums for dealing with enterprise level concerns has failed miserably.

It has been a wild ride. When it was all about UP, RUP, EUP, PLE, and Waterfall I was always in a battle to trim back the process ceremony in order avoid waste being template zombies. Then the Agile Age of Aquarius took over and I couldn't get anyone to give any thought to anything before riding off into cowboy coding bliss. The majority of the projects went from tons of worthless documents to tons of worthless code!!!!

After spending a lot of time battling the Agile Age of Aquarius coding cowboys I am so thankful some of the leaders in the industry, like the authors of this book, are starting to swing the pendulum back the other way. I just wish people would get that it's about tailoring to meet the needs of a project with the resources available. One shoe size doesn't fit everyone.

DAD is a hybrid of agile methods including Scrum, XP, Agile Modeling, Lean, Agile Data, and the Unified Process. It does what so many successful Agile projects are doing today that are larger in size. It uses what works, when its needed, and leaves the Agile Zealot Elitist Attitude behind. It is so refreshing to read an Agile book without the attitude.

DAD recognizes Scrum's shortcomings as primarily focused on management and brings back architecture and includes agile development practices that are easily excused from most Scrum projects.

DAD includes phases. It includes a project initiation and release activities that are missing from Scrum. DAD has three phases Inception, Construction, and Transition.

DAD also comes in two flavors, basic and advanced. The primary difference is that advanced is for more experienced teams that can take advantage of lean strategies which eliminates the iterations and the work item stack in favor of the work item pool. The book primarily focuses on the basic DAD process.

The only complaint I have about the book is that the diagrams showing the Disciplined Agile Delivery life cycle - Basic, and the Disciplined Agile Delivery life cycle - Advanced should have been full page diagrams. They are too small to read in the book. It is not really a big deal since they are available on the web.

The book is really well written. It is very detailed and also entertaining making very easy to read. Throughout the book "Lessons from the Trenches" sidebars bring real world experience to the topics being covered.

The authors also include a case study for each of the phases they cover based on a project that builds a point of sale system. This gives the reader the opportunity to see the artifact creating activities in action.

All in all I found the book to be an excellent resource for the agilist looking to move beyond small develop teams. It is an absolute must read for enterprise architects and other senior management working in the IT shop.

Many "agile" buzzwords describing a 30 year old process

Ultimately, when you strip the text of the agile terminology, what you get is an anecdotal description of a standard iterative approach, much better delivered in books like Walker Royce's "Software Project Management - A Unified framework". It reiterates what many software professionals already know: "Iterative" done right is agile. Worse, it brings no concrete metrics to back any of the claims and recommendations. The book addresses another well known fact: Traditional agile (usually meaning Scrum) does not scale up well for Enterprise IT projects requiring large project teams and delivering complex solutions.
The only redeeming value I found in the book is that it concentrates many well known engineering and Project Management best practices, but then again, books like Capers Jones's "Software Engineering Best Practices" do it better and back their findings with facts from well researched studies.
