Hypnotizing...like scalding hellfire!!!

I was stunned, dazed and completely overcome with dizzying effect this spin left me. HYPNOTIZED is a remarkably well blended romance and mystery, with fascinating shades similar to that or almost akin to paranormal. The way each layer of Olivia's discovery of her forgotten past is revealed is deftly done and exceptionally suspenseful. There are so many things to love about this book, I was immediately drawn at the prologue alone. One of the best things about it is that there are enough twist and turns to keep you wondering. The relationship between Olivia and Ivana, her stepmother, is heart warming....or so it seems, but don't let that fool you. This one will have you hooked from the very first page.

This is an abundance of charm…Marlow Kane's perky, at times dark and foreboding first-person narration carries readers along to a warm, gratifying conclusion. The wants, needs and obsession is just mind numbing over the top and yet not enough. Every moment Marlow and Olivia are together sets the scenes on fire, they're way over their heads or nothing at all. They're possessed, obsessed with each other you could almost feel the heat singesl. Every private, heated most carnal moments between a man and a woman, the words are described beautifully, exquisitely, it's like a communion of souls. One passage, words uttered by Marlow, touched me...quote "you're the color of my blood, Olivia, what hurts you hurts me. There's no difference between your skin and mine" quote....Aww!

The elements of mystery and suspense in every turn is gripping. I was held in wonderment over much of this story and realized early on to expect the unexpected. This is a story of betrayal and deceit, trust and true love. Ms.Le Carre is an author with brilliant mind and wild imagination, her descriptive narration so fascinating, unbridled that I am left in awe, utterly! Ms. Le Carre's page after page of captivating, bewitching tale intertwined with positively splendid charming romance, disproves the adage that "you can't go home again."

Two words... UTTERLY RIVETING from start to finish, a book of healing, understanding, rebirth, and finally accepting, a story that you won't forget easily...I could only sigh in appreciation as I turned the last few pages, so well-written and thought-provoking.

A most fantastic novel…when the story comes to an end and the curtains have been lowered, the lights dimmed…and the reader is left with a longing to know more...there is no better compliment to the author. If you were performing on stage, Ms Le Carre....it's a STANDING OVATION! BRAVO!!!

Oh my! I loved this book! Hypnotized is a deliciously dark, well crafted standalone novel by Georgia Le Carre and it totally rocked my world. The story drew me in on the first page and held me completely enthralled, gripping the edge of my chair until the very last line. Once I started reading, I simply could not stop. My heart stuttered, my breath quickened, my pulse pounded as the blood rushed through my veins and yes, it was absolutely that good! The narrative is contemporary, imaginative and beautifully written in the first person with alternating his and her points of view from the two protagonists, Dr Marlowe Kane, former successful neurosurgeon from America now practicing clinical hypnosis in London, and Lady Olivia Swanson, a wealthy British aristocrat suffering from severe memory loss caused by a devastating automobile accident. Marlowe Kane is an emotionally paralyzed man crippled by guilt as a result of a tragic loss, now living a tortured miserable existence with no hope for the future until he agrees to take Olivia as a patient, hopefully to help her recover her memories through the use of hypnosis. For the first time in years, he begins to experience inexplicable yet undeniable feelings for Olivia but desperately tries to fight his increasing attraction to his beautiful patient and remain professional. Olivia also feels the forbidden combustible chemistry between them which takes on a life of its own, refusing to be denied by either as they are drawn into its irresistible vortex. I fell head over heels in love with each of these flawed and complex characters. They were both well developed, remarkable, engaging and utterly perfect for each other. And most surprising is the fact that neither of them are what they initially appear to be reminding us that in the end, we are all merely human, capable of questionable decisions and horrendous mistakes yet still worthy of love and redemption. The dialogue was intelligent, raw, sexy and flowed effortlessly. Georgia Le Carre is a naturally gifted storyteller and master of her trade. She draws in her reader, charms and captivates, invoking a variety of opposing emotions while leaving a tantalizing trail of breadcrumbs to follow, skillfully leads them through a well orchestrated gambit of surprising twists and turns generously laced with spine-tingling suspense and sinfully delicious erotic sex, then shocks them senseless with an unexpected but satisfying conclusion. Absolute perfection! I loved it! I'm totally smitten with Georgia Le Carre and her unique style of writing. What did I like about this story? Everything! What didn't I like? Not a darn thing! Would I recommend this book? You bet and I am but only for adult readers. Will I read this author again? Absolutely! Just as soon as she releases her next book!

for aspiring artists

This is a book for artists. It is straight forward and short. It doesn't get too complicated, but falls more on the lines of "gems of wisdom". The art is inspiring of course, but i think this book isn't just for the comics geek. This is about the life and attitude of being an artist. I'm sure Alfredo Alcala will inspire you. If you spend all your time in front of paper or canvas honing your craft this book is suited towards you and i'm sure you'll like it.

A wonderful look at the way a master comic artist plans.

I remember in the 1970's being eager each month for the latest issue of The Savage Sword of Conan to be on bookseller's shelf. The black and white art in this over-sized comic book typically was much more impressive than that in the smaller color comics, and a big part of the reason for that was because of Alfredo Alcala. And so, when I saw this book was available (again), I couldn't resist getting my hands on it.

First...this is not a portfolio. This is not just drawing after drawing to ogle over, though there is plenty of art inside, it's not being reproduced on a frame-able quality.

Second...this book is only eighty pages long and more than a quarter of it is taken up with introductions (by Gil Kane and Roy Thomas, at least).

Third..."Secrets Teachings" is a bit of a misnomer - there really aren't any secrets here, but we do get some insight into Alcala and his technique and his thought process as he develops a comic book. And this is what makes the book worth-while.

Before his work on Conan, Alcala created and illustrated a series called Voltar (a clear predecessor to Conan), and this book selects one issue of Voltar and Alcala walks the reader through the entire issue, explaining his thought process to the layout of the page and for each panel and even why some things are light, some dark, etc. It was really fascinating to read how much thought goes into this from the artist's point of view.

Because, when I think of Alcala's work, I think of his incredibly detailed work, I would have liked to have more insight into his actual process of inking. I did appreciate his mentioning how artists need to be able to draw (not just 'finish'), and how learning about the human body and how it reacts in different poses is important (and he gives an example of when it doesn't work).

Alcala mentions using both pen and brush as tools in his art, and here again I would like to know more. I had always assumed his work (look at the drawing on the cover as pictured above) was purely pen and ink. Where and when would he use a brush?

Though I still have questions about his work, I really enjoyed this book, both for the art and for what I learned. I recommend this book very highly for anyone interested in art, not just comic books.

Looking for a good book? Secret Teachings of a Comic Book Master: The Art of Alfredo Alcala is a wonderful look at the thought process of one of the best artist/inkers in comic book history and should be read, not just by comic book fans but by anyone who appreciates great art.

It offers an interview with a close friend of Alcala's, reviewing the advices he received from him and giving a few insights into his personality; and a small interview with Alcala Apart from diverse small examples from his works mainly before coming to America, it includes around fifteen pages from his masterwork Voltar, with his own explanations about composition. All in black and white.
