This textbook provides an introduction to Internetworking and wide area networks and their related technology. The OSI models, popular network protocols and technology, and routing technology and protocols are discussed. It also provides detailed examples of subnetting the network, including IPv4, CIDR,VLSM, and IPv6, and introduces voice communications, including VoIP, wireless technology, and WAN security. Cisco switches and routers are also discussed to show how to enable and configure wide area technology, and the text covers the material found in the Cisco CCNA exam.

When first learning WAN material, I was often faced with books that were inadequate in depth of the material or books that were written for electrical engineers. In addition, after reading several books and performing research on the Internet, I felt that there were large areas where knowledge and understanding should be better. This book was designed to give an overall study of WANs and WAN technology and should help clarify those areas.

To make sure that readers have had the basics, the first chapters review the OSI model, Ethernet, and Token Ring. Next comes a thorough review of TCP/IP and IPX/SPX protocols/ standards with an emphasis on TCP/IP addressing. The book then starts looking at switches and bridges and how they affect network performance and security.

After gaining a good understanding of how LANs work, you will be ready to connect them together with routers and other WAN devices. Therefore, the book moves into WAN technology, including T-Carrier and E-Carrier systems, ISDN, X.25, Frame Relay, ATM, routers, and routing protocols. The book then finishes with an overview of WAN security and voice communications (including VOIP) and wireless technology.

To reinforce the material, each chapter contains review questions. In addition to configuring protocols on Windows machines and reviewing scenarios, the book presents hands-on experience with WAN technology in the chapters on Cisco switches and Cisco routers.

As you go through the book, you will notice that a lot of information is repeated. This allows the chapters to be taught out of order and helps to complete the overall picture. In addition, I have found that the best way to teach this material is to repeat the information as often as I can.

I would always recommend that, before taking a course on WAN technology, the reader should have had a course in LANs or networking technology or have equivalent knowledge of the COMPTIA Network+ exam. In addition, they should already be familiar with the Microsoft Windows environment and how to connect a computer to a network. For a review, however, many of the necessary LAN components that affect WAN connectivity have been discussed.

About the Author
Julia Johnson divides her time between Dubai and an old water mill in Worcestershire, England. A thirst for adventure took Julia and her architect husband Brian to Dubai in 1975, where she soon became a familiar face reading children’s stories on Dubai Channel 33, subsequently appearing in BBC Television and Radio productions in the UK. She has toured schools in the Emirates and the UK in Theatre-in-Education productions, acted in several stage plays and recorded over 100 audio books. Since 2001 she has been writing stories for children. The Pearl Diver is recommended by the Hamilton Trust, an online resource provider for schools. The Leopard Boy was awarded a Kirkus star in America, and was endorsed by former UK Children’s Book Laureate and award-winning author, Michael Morpurgo. The Turtle Secret was the winner of the Best International Children’s Book Award at the Sharjah International Book Fair 2014. Julia loves to write stories about the rich and colourful heritage of the Arabian Gulf and Oman, and she tours the region giving talks and workshops. She also visits schools in the UK, and is a regular speaker at the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature.

Useful insights

I read the book before I read the reviews here. After I read the book, I thought to myself that the author had some interesting ideas. Not many people before 2007 thought so negatively about bankers : before the crisis, bankers were well-respected people who were regarded as upright, intelligent and deservedly rich. Young graduates rushed to join banks not only for the money but the prestige. Now we know how wrong we all were. The banks abused the privilege (of being able to create money from thin air) given to them, chased short-term profits that resulted in the collapse of the system, dragging down innocent people with them. If anything, the book should have served as a warning to policy makers before 2007 that bankers should be reined in. I disagree with the other reader who called the author Marxist and other names. The facts support her views. Banks serve an important function in a capitalist society, but they have to be kept under a leash, otherwise they will do damage to the society. Credit creation is a two-way sword, we need it for economic growth, but if it is given too loosely, it will destroy the system. This is not Marxist speak, this is pragmatism.

Prescient Book

In this book published in 2006 Ann Pettifor put forward a detailed scenario in which excessive debt in the developed world caused a serious economic crisis. The 2008 financial crisis proceeded exactly as she suggested it would. Pettifor does an excellent job of explaining how the basic financial structure of our society was undermined in the lead up to our most recent crisis. I have read fairly extensively on economics, and this book contains by far the best explanation of what money is and how it works that I have encountered. Pettifor makes a case for her own solutions to the problems leading up to the crisis, which are mostly radically outside of the mainstream options being considered. Of course the idea of a first world financial collapse was outside of the mainstream when the book was published.

Ultimately the presentation of the flaws in our system that led to the crisis is easily separated from the critique/solutions that Pettifor presents. Pettifor's ideological bent isn't as cut and dry as other reviewers have suggested, people ranging from marxists to libertarians will find suggestions they agree with and others they don't. Even if you aren't amenable to any of the solutions proposed in the book it does such a phenomenal job of outlining the problem that, regardless of your ideological bent, it is well worth your time. If you are looking for an incisive analysis of the underlying flaws that have lately plagued our economy this is the book for you.

Should be compulsary reading in all colleges

Dr. Pettifor sums up in quick reading what has really been going on in finance and economy.
How was she able to get the G8 or EU to 'forgive billions in debt owed by "developing" countries?
Because she - and they - know that money is created from nothing.
Therefore, the IMF, World Bank and whoever else didn't lose a dime forgiving those loans.
Yes, other authors have come before her - and we should read those books, as well.
Dr. Pettifor is the most recent eye-witness, and this book is a valuable contribution.

The administrative difficulties of radical war plans

More than the battles, the book provides a comprehensive analysis of how
a bold military vision - fanatical, ideology-driven citizen soldiers defending their homeland - crashed with reality in the last months of the German Empire, such as the bureaucratic turf battles, the high hopes for the inspiring power of Nazi leadership dashed by the people's waning trust in them, the reality of the people preferring to work with the professionalism of regular Army units over propaganda- and ideology-heavy Nazi-centered organizing schemes, and the conflicting notions of fairness in the way people were selected and assigned to various war tasks. Many photos capture the cruelly ambiguous situation of the middle-aged and elderly soldiers, their ambivalent attitude toward their deployment, and the contrast between propaganda presentation and battleground realities. One can't but feel sympathetic for all those old soldiers many of whom must have also served in WWI, holding their ground with only substandard equipment and training (and fitness), and not much recognized in military history. Was interested in the subject since I'm in the similar age-group, and also am attracted to war situations that seem hopeless/pointless to the soldiers, soldiers who soldier on in the face of hopelessness and total skepticism. Germany's ally the Japanese Empire also had the same kind of plan for calling into soldier duty about the same age group, and just like Germany, contacted, asked for and got US to recognize their new teenage conscripts as official combattants and not irregular guerillas prior to the battle on Okinawa from April 1945.

A solid, in-depth look at the Nazis' last hope

This book is a serious, in-depth look at one of the Nazis' last "miracles" against the advancing Allies toward the end of World War II, when the war was virtually lost. Masterfully researched and documented, Yelton's book reads a bit like a long academic paper, which stands to reason, as I believe the book owes its origins to Yelton's dissertation.

As the forward states, there is no one place or location that contains a significant cache of Volkssturm documents in Germany, so the author spent a great deal of time, energy and money to produce this work. It shows in the reading. Unlike many accounts of the Third Reich, most of which usually gloss over the Volkssturm, this is a critical look at the milita's origins, reasons for forming, the fight among Nazi leaders to lead the militia and its performance in battle.

A few tidbits that made for wonderful, surprising reading:
1. The Volkssturm "People Storm" was controlled by the Nazi Party, not the Wermacht. The reasons for this are many, but it largely contributed to the milita's mostly poor performance on the battlefield, with notable exceptions (also discussed in the book).

2. Nazi leaders were fearful that Volkssturm members were going to be treated as partisans if caught by Allies and subsequently shot. Shockingly to this reader, the Nazis actually initiated contact with the British and Americans prior to the milita's formation to inquire how Volkssturm members would be treated if captured. Getting a positive response from Allied leadership that the unit would be treated as a legal militia (again, to my astonishment), the Nazis proceeded to form the Volkssturm. One can't help but wonder if the Allies had denied the Volkssturm "militia status" if the war would have been shortened on the Western Front, resulting in fewer Allied deaths.

The middle of the book is a bit of a dry read, as Yelton gets bogged down in a buffet of statistics. But, sticking with the book has its rewards, as Yelton discusses at length the militia's performance in battle toward the end of the war.

I would highly recommend this book to any student of WW II who would like to know more about the Volkssturm, its origins and performance in battle. "Hitler's Volkssturm" makes a welcome addition to any World War II bookshelf.

The "Cripple-Guard"

We have all seen the images of elderly gentlemen and young boys shouldering Panzerfausts and antiquated rifles. Such photos speak to the futility of the Nazi cause as the Second World War in Europe came to a rapid close. The Volkssturm, a last-ditch response was nicknamed the Kr�ppelgarde ('cripple-guard') or HJ-Sp�tlese ('late-vintage Hitler Youth'). Its members could not be termed fanatical, if anything, they wanted nothing more than to surrender and get on with defeat and reconstruction having recognized a lost cause.

The individual accounts of forced participation and ultimate capitulation are engrossing but ultimately sad. This is by far the best account of the Volkssturm's short service and ranks up there in terms of fascination along with the Hitler Youth and the Werewolves. All three groups represent examples of the Nazis power of propaganda rather than truly effective fighting forces.

Good investment

I have been looking for a good binary options strategy and I have found it with this title. The author tells you which indicators to use and gives many examples of how to use this strategy. It's a really good strategy for the sideways market but you will need to be patient as the indicators can take a while before lining up. Also I had some questions and emailed the author and he kindly replied within a short space of time. All in all this book is a good investment.

EV - Great for the RIGHT situation

Earned Value is a great Project Management tool when the situation is right.
In my mind, the "right" situation is where you work for a large company where the deliverables are WELL defined in terms of monetary value and the expected duration of the work. In these cases EV can be really useful for keeping track of your work and budget status as well as forecasting.
This book does a great job of explaining what EV is and how to use it effectively. One point that I felt it does not cover well is defining how you get your "EV." This is actually a very straightforward process that I felt the author should have spent at least a few paragraphs on.
Overall...If I was building a plane...say with a budget of $10 million and had 2.5 years to build it in; then I would definitely use EV and this book as a reference guide.

One of the best books on Earned Value!

The reader that is familiar with Project Management Institute books will find it extremely useful and connected to real life. Presents Earned Value definition and how is possible to organize your projects based on Earned Value principles. If you're interested to have results oriented projects, or if you're interested in project performance, or project monitoring, this book is really helpful. I highly reccomend you to read and use it. If you like "not so academic" books, you might find it a little bit too condensed, and probably you'll need to search for something else. Microsoft Projects offers very good definitions of Earned Value, Cost Performance Index and Schedule Performance Index that you might learn as first steps.

Where is the rest?

So far I have found two books dedicated to the topic of earned value: this book by Fleming and Koppelman and another book entitled `Using Earned Value' by Alan Webb. Note that I am not listing the earned value `Cliff notes' entitled `Project Management: The Commonsense Approach" by the Lamberts, which will not add to your understanding of earned value management or analysis, and serves, at best, as a memory jogger on the basic concepts.

"Earned Value Project Management, Second Edition" by Fleming and Koppelman provides a good treatment of the history of earned value and of the calculation methods of its core measurements. However the book falls short in terms of methods of analysis and interpretation of these measurements, which is really where project managers need guidance and expertise. Indeed calculations are automated by the scheduling packages (e.g. Microsoft Project, Primavera, etc.), in other words getting the numbers is never the problem (although some packages have had their share of problems doing this), or let's just say it's the easy part. Obviously one needs to understand how the numbers are calculated and what they mean but this part of earned value does not require a whole book about it. The true challenge in earned value management is the analysis part. Once you have the numbers, you need to understand what they mean to your project, how they trend, how they relate/influence one another and most importantly how you should use them in gauging the health of your project. This information then needs to be translated in either corrective actions (which are hopefully proportional to the problem at hand) or inaction (provided that you have made the conscious decision, based on the data, to keep things as they are). I believe that this is where this book falls short. It gives the reader an understanding of the concepts but lacks in the guidance that is required for a true, practical, and day-to-day application of earned value on projects. In another words, it's a good start but not quite enough.

A challenge for cultural anthropologists because Berlin establishes the validity of his thesis

This is easily the most difficult book I have ever read, both because it deals exclusively in taxonomic nomenclature and because the the theory Berlin presents is a radical upheavel in the world of cultural anthropology and ethnobiology. How do human beings come to name, order, define and organize species of the natural world they live in? Intended for an audience of experts in the fields listed above, Berlin's work argues that there is a universal scheme shared by all human beings in the way we classify and organize our knowledge of the natural world.
