A consummate manager, Wilson employed the tenancy and sharecropping system to his advantage while earning a reputation for fair treatment of laborers, a reputation -- Whayne suggests -- not entirely deserved. He cultivated a cadre of relatives and employees from whom he expected absolute devotion. Leveraging every asset during his life and often deeply in debt, Wilson saved his company from bankruptcy several times, leaving it to the next generation to successfully steer the business through the challenges of the 1930s and World War II.

Delta Empire traces the transition from the labor-intensive sharecropping and tenancy system to the capital-intensive neo-plantations of the post--World War II era to the portfolio plantation model. Through Wilson's story Whayne provides a compelling case study of strategic innovation and the changing economy of the South in the late nineteenth century.

Jeannie Whayne is a professor of history at the University of Arkansas. She has authored, coauthored, or edited ten books, including A New Plantation South: Land, Labor, and Federal Favor in Twentieth-Century Arkansas, Shadows over Sunnyside: Evolution of a Plantation in Arkansas, 1830--1945, and Arkansas Delta: A Land of Paradox. She is past-president of the Agricultural History Society, a distinguished lecturer with the Organization of American Historians, a member of the executive board of the Southern Historical Association, and recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Arkansas Historical Association.

About the Author
Lisa A. Keister is a professor of sociology and the Director of the Markets and Management Program at Duke University. She conducts research on wealth inequality, asset accumulation and the causes of each. She is the author of Getting Rich: America's New Rich and How They Got There (Cambridge University Press, 2005) and Wealth in America (Cambridge University Press, 2000). Her research on Chinese corporations and the country's economic transition appeared in her book Chinese Business Groups (2000) as well as various articles.

Darby E. Southgate is an assistant professor of sociology at Los Angeles Valley College and a research consultant. Her primary research interests are poverty, education and culture. Her research investigates the intersection of socioeconomic status, education and culture. She has authored numerous entries on culture, specifically on music and society. Though believed dead in the disaster, Winston, Lourdes and Dillon still live. Dillon is held prisoner in a secret military installation where the government hopes to exploit his power to resurrect the dead. He escapes with the help of Elon Tessic, the brilliant Israeli engineer who designed his prison, and is reunited with Winston, who's been searching for him and Lourdes, driven by a strange dream that portends disaster. The Shards' old enemy, soul-eating alien Okoya, warns them of the arrival of three Vectors, beings of his own race who've come to Earth after being driven out of their own space by a mysterious virus. Now Lourdes is cooperating with the aliens and Dillon and his remaining companions must somehow recover and reunite the rest of the missing Shards if they have any hope of saving Earth. Though things come together a bit too easily in the end, strong themes of morality, vengeance and the emotional cost of great power should intrigue thoughtful readers, whether or not they've read the previous volumes.

profound work of art

I read Scorpion Shards as a middle schooler among Shusterman's numerous other books already published at the time -- and it has stuck with me and remained one of my all-time favorite YA novels. I then followed it through Thief of Souls and Shattered Sky, but was not able to finish the latter back when because I was later hospitalized in the same year and forgot to go back.

I returned to the trilogy now as an adult, over 19 years later, and Shattered Sky rattled me in its depth. It was a profound look into what it means to be human. I felt it really explored many layers of the tension between good and evil, of wrong and right -- and how often the two can come intertwined. The material within this book was far more mature than its preceding two books, and I enjoyed following the maturation.

I actually had to pause through the book so I could journal out what was coming up for me. The whole trilogy represents for me the struggle of humans, who have one foot in the animal world and one foot in the divine, and their own power -- the complex, often paradoxical nature of light and dark and the evolution of soul growth that powerful people must take before truly stepping into who they were born to be.

It's infused with Shusterman's signature creativity and magic, yet often heavy with these complex themes. (I love heavy in this way, though.)

I felt satisfied with the completion of the three stories. I even bought an extra, autographed set of the three books so that I can lend them out in the future. Amazing.

It's well known that Japanese women have the lowest obesity rate in the industrialized world (3%) and the highest life expectancy (85 years), and that their cuisine is based on simplicity. Tokyo native Moriyama puts a human face on this phenomenon, that of her mother, Chizuko, in this well-organized, persuasive introduction to a non-Western everyday cooking plan. Just as Moriyama reconstructed Chizuko's cooking practices for herself and her coauthor husband, Doyle (Inside the Oval Office), she shows readers the elements of Chizuko's 6'�12' Tokyo kitchen. She details its pantry ingredients, including bonito (fish) flakes and daikon (radish) and tools such as a rice cooker and wok. Most recipes are based on at least one of the "seven pillars"—fish, vegetables, rice, soy, noodles, tea, fruit—and are familiar and easy to make (Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura, Teriyaki Fish, etc.). Cooking tips abound, but what adds a French Women Don't Get Fat angle is the useful eating advice, such as "Hara hachi bunme," or "Eat until you are 80 percent full." It's a call for moderation that occurs throughout other cultures, and if it's the Japanese version that speaks to readers, good for Moriyama.

I love the recipes

I love the recipes. They are super delish.
The writing, however, is a little too preachy for my taste. It was an easy enough read though.
Also, when it says it cooks for 4, it's assuming you have the traditional rice, miso, entree and multiple sides. For dinner I would cook 2 dishes, have miso with tofu, and rice. We would split it into about thirds. One for me, one for the S/o. One for lunch (for me) the next day.
