About the Author

Philip Hasheider is a farmer and writer. He's the author of How to Raise Cattle and How to Raise Pigs. A former cheesemaker's assistant, he lives on a farm near Sauk City, Wisconsin.

Samantha Johnson (Phelps, Wisconsin) and her brother, Daniel, have collaborated on a number of rural-living guidebooks, including How to Raise Rabbits and Beginner's Guide to Beekeeping. Both are 4-H alumni and live on the family farm, Fox Hill Farm, in far northern Wisconsin. Samantha is a certified horse show judge and raises purebred Welsh Mountain ponies and Dutch, Holland Lop, and Netherland Dwarf rabbits.

Even small-time farmers will find this book helpful!

I recently purchased 2.5 acres of land. While I've always grown vegetables in containers, I've never grown them on a larger scale. I've also never raised animals. I've been looking for advice on doing both and this book is exactly what I needed.

There's a lot of information on start-up costs, and making a living at farming. I don't intend to make a living by farming but still found the information helpful .. it's good to know how much I'll spend to raise chickens, for example, or which kinds of corn will best suit a larger garden.

Being vegan, I don't intend to raise animals for food but rather because we enjoy their company. Also, many varieties help control insects, undergrowth, etc. While this book does talk about raising animals for food and even offers a whole section on butchering them, it also includes valuable information on things like the amount of space they need, appropriate shelters, food, etc. There's also a whole section on typical health problems and how to prevent them. I especially liked the advice on an animals social preferences and how to keep them happy.

Other reviews of this book have said that it isn't detailed enough but, from my standpoint, it's just perfect. It offers me a place to start with enough information to be successful.

A down-to-earth overview of farming

I bought this book off a clearance table at Tractor Supply, so I wasn't expecting too much. But I've looked through it and find it is actually very useful as an overview of many factors involved in establishing and maintaining a farm. It is not a pretty story of how "I left the city and became one with nature"...nor is it a detailed encyclopedia of all aspects of farming. But it is a very down to earth exploration of the reality of day-to-day farming, including information on fencing, equipment use and maintenance, livestock, food production, conservation and safety (you rarely find a whole chapter devoted to the dangers of farming including dust/mold/chemicals, farm machinery and child safety; although in reference to the last, studies have shown farm children are at high risk of injury or death from accidents involving machinery, irrigation and livestock).

I think most people new to farming or considering starting one would benefit from the information included. I'm glad I bought it.

There is an old story about people describing an elephant, one by touching a leg, one by sitting on the elephant, one by feeling it blow through its large trunk, and so on. Each person has a different understanding of the elephant. Their collected descriptions describe the strength, gentleness, and force of the elephant from different perspectives. To fully understand the elephant, it is necessary to collect many perspectives and to present them as parts of a profile.

Now, consider the English word occupation. No doubt many images come to mind. In contemplating this book, our goal was to provide a variety of ways for people to consider how humans occupy their time, dedicate their energy, realize their sense of personhood, and organize their societies. Occupations can be considered in economic terms, in social terms, as expressions of personality, or as "doings" that influence health and well-being.

Historically, the literature of human occupation has focused on particular perspectives. There have been books on time use, books on leisure and work, books on occupational hazards and safety, and books on occupational medicine and occupational therapy, among others. But no book has previously invited authors from a range of disciplines and backgrounds to explore what people do, and why, how, where, with whom, and to what consequences these everyday occupations collectively define, organize, and influence our lives. This book takes the view that occupations include all meaningful acts that collectively define and give meaning to daily living.

In his book Acts of Meaning, Jerome Bruner has written that people understand their lives through stories. He then points out that these stories are constructed from the acts that are central to everyday human occupations. In this book, the acts that comprise and give meaning to lives are explored in all their complexity, providing awareness that this is a topic that is large and complex like an elephant. This book is boring.

Enjoy spending hours of your life pondering the definition of a single word? You will love this book. Otherwise it is boring, and delves far too deeply into the meaning of the word "occupation." Let's just choose a definition and move on with our lives. With every sentence you can feel the authors trying to justify their careers.

Confusing

As I started to read this book the introduction seemed to be a conclusion summing up all the chapters to come. Entering into the first chapter left me frustrated because it also cited from the other chapters. I feel that I should be reading this book backwards, perhaps then I wouldn't be so confused. Perhaps if you can get through the first part of this book it gets better, good luck.

Since the publication of the first edition of this book in 1981, it has been widely used as a textbook at university level for graduate courses in environmental management, environmental science and environmental technology (for non-engineers). As this second edition is significantly improved, it should find an even wider application than the first.

In the second edition, the section on ecotoxicology and effects on pollutants has been expanded considerably, as has Chapter 4 on ecological principles and concepts. Further improvement has been made by the addition of a section on ecological engineering - the application of ecologically sound technology in ecosystems - and an appendix on environmental examination of chemicals. The problems of agricultural waste have been included in Part B, and in Chapter 6 on waste water treatment, several pages have been added about non-point sources and the application of ``soft'' technology. Throughout the book, more examples, questions and problems have been included, and several figures and tables have been added to better illustrate the text.

Jocelyn R. Neal is Associate Professor of Music and Adjunct Associate Professor of American Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Yikes - this looks daunting!

As a beginning learner, I expected this book to be a bit more structured vs diving right into complex sentences and phrases.
For me personally, this book would have been more helpful to focus on everyday usage in the office place, as opposed to focusing on a specfic business situation (financial turnaround).

Very clear explanations

This book contains relevant though simple examples and it's very well explained, which is really unusual for a french professor (believe me, I made my PhD in France).

Currently I'm teaching a course on Formal Methods in software Engineering, and I found this book helpful.
