Deliciously shocking...and motivating.

This book blew my mind… and was a real boot in the pants for me. Beyond educating me about the fascinating—and it turns out ancient—history of “editorial cartooning.” It inspired me to be less afraid to push the envelope with my own work. Really a unique book, with deliciously shocking visuals and commentary. If you’re interesting in how artists have spanked the status quo over the centuries, and continue to do so today, I would highly recommend Mr. Fish’s book.

In his [new] book, [Mr. Fish] describes cartoonists a '...a pest tasked with the mosquito-like responsibility of disrupting complacency...'.

This isn't the first book that's written about the power of cartoons. In 2013, we reviewed Victor Navasky's The Art of Controversy, a review of controversial cartoons through the centuries. But the approach and scope of Warning are novel. Instead of using a chronological order, the author jumps back and forth through time. This approach is not only refreshing, it also allows the author more freedom to compare cartoons and artworks from different time periods. Mr Fish has also broadened the scope by broadening the definition of what he considers to be a political cartoon. His selection includes paintings, sculptures, poetry and even performance art.

Cartoons have, since their inception, been considered a form of 'low art' (if they were considered art at all), but in my opinion Mr. Fish is quite correct to put them on par with other art that makes a social statement. What the book succeeds in doing is to make us reflect on the nature of art, and the role of art in society. Mr. Fish focuses on the ability of art to upset the status quo, to mobilize people and to inspire change.

In a way, Warning is a guided tour through a museum full of unexpected surprises, its pages filled with art you had not seen before, and familiar art seen in a new light. Structured like a play with different acts, the book is interspersed with conversations with people such as Noam Chomsky and Art Spiegelman.

[WARNING! Graphic Content] is a worthy effort and certainly worthy of reading by anyone with a keen interest in art and society. There are not that many books that focus on political cartoons, and even less that do this as eloquently as Warning. Plus, you'll find out why New Yorker cartoons suck.

A book like no other I've seen

A really outstanding piece of work. Part art, part political history, but ultimately call to arms for anyone interested in changing society to reflect the concerns of the many. A deep thinker with a literary talent that surprised me. Mr Fish is a voice and an artist sorely needed, and what a talent!. Courageous and discourteous to all the right people. And damn funny too.

A comprehensive study with a useful framework for analyzing past and present conflict in Sudan and South Sudan

I have been doing research on Sudan and South Sudan in academic and organizational settings since my third year of college and have read just about every book that focuses on conflict in Sudan. Douglas Johnson's work is the most comprehensive, although I recommend reading work by R.O. Collins, J.M. Jok, S.E. Hutchinson, P.A. Nyaba, Alex de Waal, and John Young as well for various approaches and perspectives on Sudan's conflict. Johnson frames his assessment of the history of conflict in Sudan as a matter of unequal distribution of power and wealth between the center and peripheries. Over the past several hundred years, the political center has shifted from Darfur/Kordofan during the Mahdi's time, to colonial power focused on agricultural schemes, to riverine Arab groups that dominated politics from Sudan's independence in 1956 until South Sudan's independence in 2011, and continue to dominate Sudan today.

Johnson traces the development of uneven power relationships, specifically focusing on issues of land appropriation on Sudan's margins that produced disaffection among groups that the state ostensibly should have been serving. Center-periphery relations are framed both in political and spatial terms, and the overlaps between these are covered fairly well in Johnson's work. The complexities produced by these political and spatial dynamics are very nuanced: for example, during the 1970s, Equatorian politicians sided with President Nimeiry (political center at the time) in favor of federalism for South Sudan; however, this decentralization of power would have actually produced weaker states rather than strength in Southern Sudan, and thus it was opposed by the more powerful politicians in Juba. Furthermore, Nimeiry's offer of federalism elided the issue of Khartoum's appropriation of Unity State and sections of Upper Nile that were found during the 1970s to contain oil reserves.

This updated version of "Root Causes" brings the analysis of relations between center and periphery right up to South Sudan's independence, and proves relevant to conceptualizing dynamics in both Sudan and South Sudan as civil wars continue to rage on multiple fronts in both countries. Johnson treats fairly carefully the coalitions and fractions of various political parties, although for more in-depth histories of political groups, other supplemental sources are needed (for anyone interested, I have created a visual timeline: http://mapeastafrica.com/sudan-political-timelines-project/). Johnson's conclusion is that the fundamental relations of power in Sudan have not changed, despite South Sudan's independence. The continuing drive to privatize communal land in the name of development continues to enrich the political elite while destroying livelihoods and producing rebellions on the peripheries.

Overall, I found this book informative and worth reading. The timeline in the back of the book also allows the reader to glance at an overview of events as he or she progresses through Sudan's recent history. Along with P.A. Nyaba's "The Politics of Liberation in South Sudan" and Jok Madut Jok's "Sudan: Race, Religion and Violence," I class this as a must-read for those wishing to learn about the recent history of Sudan and South Sudan.

About the Author

Charles Bukowski is one of America’s best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in 1920 in Andernach, Germany, to an American soldier father and a German mother, and brought to the United States at the age of two. He was raised in Los Angeles and lived there for over fifty years. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp.

The essence of Bukowski as I see him

The poems in this volume consistently present Bukowski as I've come to see him -- perceptive, self-deprecating, and frequently and unexpectedly funny as hell. There isn't really a bad or wasted line in here. This opinion is based on my knowledge of Bukowski derived from having read maybe 90 percent of his books. If you can have only one volume of Bukowski poetry, this should be it, in good part because it includes musings from his East Hollywood period and the affluent San Pedro days. In this regard, You may notice that Bukowski almost never mentions money or personal finances in his earlier work, but in San Pedro, mortgages, tax accountants, and the price of automobiles enter his view.

If you are scared of the Naughty-bits

For those of you who appreciate the less carnal side of Charles Bukowski's writing "Dangling in the Tournefortia" is a great choice. It appears that what is most obviously dangling in this work is Mr. Bukowski's place in line, no longer at the far end of the unemployment line but not one soul away from entering the rest home either. On one hand you have poems like "My Big Fling" that describe how the Chinaski gets into a fight with his woman, storms out to a hotel, climbs into bed with drinks and watches TV...only to find out the next day he and his woman watched the same show from their respective beds. On the other, you have another poem that tells Old Bukowski's story of juggling three girlfriends all half his age (about 50). Much like the rest of us, Bukowski changes, if gradually and begrudgingly, over time and in spite of the critics of his later work this is still a fine piece of his writing. Check out "Screams from the Balcony" if you think that Bukowski spent his whole life indignant to the world. Then again I suppose he wouldn't care one way or another now about our little reviews. "Dangling" is a good book for the most part.

First review? I'll take that honor. . . .

If you've found your way to this page you clearly either have an interest in Charles Bukowski or in tournefortia, which, I understand, is some sort of hanging plant -- tournefortia, I mean, is some sort of hanging plant, not Bukowski, who is a man. (Can't use "was" here, by God, because Hank will be with us always.) Ahem. Bukowski, of course, is a poet, for some of us, make that for many of us, THE poet, the best damned poet of the 20th century, maybe of the ages.
But, having found your way here, you know all that. I'm preaching to the choir. (Unless you are that rare tournefortia afficianado who cares only for plants and nothing for the sublime lines of the master. In that case, you must quit this place for a more horticulturaly friendly environment at once. At once, do you hear?)
There are many fine poems in this book: "The Lisp," "The Man at the Piano," "One for Sherwood Anderson," the list goes on and on. It's an outstanding collection, one any Bukophile should own. Hell, buy two and give one to a friend. That, at least will keep them from stealing your copy for a while, at least until someone steals their own and they need another -- damn it! -- right this minute and they know where you keep yours. Come to think of it, maybe you should buy three or four of every Bukowksi title. God knows I've lost dozens of copies of his books through the years. I take solace in the understanding that they are still out there, still being loaned and stolen and loaned again, making the rounds from needy hand to needy hand and will be doing so from now till they fall to pieces or the end of things descends upon us all.

About the Author
My research involves an integrated strategy of cross disciplinary research collaboration combining my own background in development with the work of academics from geography, sociology, social policy, gerontology and international NGOs such as Practical Action and WaterAid in seeking to influence international policy making – focussing on theoretical and implementation issues in development policy, urban governance, and North-South donor relations in areas of low-income housing and infrastructural development (water and sanitation), ageing and gender issues. My work is organised in four particular themes. First, improved infrastructure and services and the threat that it creates for security of tenure for slum dwellers in Ghana and Bangladesh with Dr. Alex Loftus (Geography, Royal Holloway), Dr. Mansoor Ali (Practical Action) and Mr. Nick Bundle (WaterAid UK). Secondly, on ageing strategies among the urban poor in Mumbai. Thirdly, on ageing strategies, transnationalism and global health care with Dr. Deborah Price (Institute of Gerontology, Kings College). Fourthly, on cultural transformation and gender issues in India and Indonesia, in collaboration with the Dr. Shruti Tambe, University of Pune (India), and Dr. Harriot Beazley in Queensland University, Australia. Funded by DFID (UK) and a grant from the British Academy, I have carried out research on NGOs and development. The research was the first of its kind in focusing on a sample of 67 urban NGOs in one city i.e. Mumbai. This research led theoretical debates on how NGOs are increasingly called upon to fill the gap between the needs of vulnerable urban groups and the partial service delivery of the public sector. I have been a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the journal Progress in Development Studies for the last eleven years. I was appointed a member of the editorial board “The Urban World” a quarterly journal of the Regional Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies (RCUES), All India Institute of Local Self Government, Mumbai in May 2009. I also hold external positions of responsibilities such as gender adviser to the Diversity Unit of the British Council, elected member of the advisory council of Global Think (Development Education Association - DEA) and research associate with Equality Research and Consulting Ltd I have co-edited two of the leading development text books. I teach on the undergraduate and Master’s programme and supervise PhD postgraduate and post-doctoral researchers. I did my Masters at Liverpool University and achieved a Wingate scholarship at Oxford University to do my DPhil supervised by Prof. Ceri Peach (Geography) and Prof. Marcus Banks (Social Anthropology). My thesis on Community participation and slum housing (Sage Publications, 1995) was awarded the Eileen Younghusband Memorial Award from the London School of Economics and Political Science. On completion in 1992, I was appointed as a Research Fellow for three years at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex and in 1996 moved to a Lectureship to the Geography Department at Royal Holloway.

Professor Rob Potter is Professor of Human Geography at the University of Reading.� His research and teaching interests span development geography and development studies; urban geography; return migration; transnationality and issues of identity.� He is author of the texts Key Concepts in Development Geography (Sage, 2012), Geographies of Development (Pearson-Prentice Hall, 2008), The Companion to Development Studies (Hodder, 2008), Doing Development Research (Sage, 2006) and The Contemporary Caribbean, Pearson-Prentice Hall, 2005).� He is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the interdisciplinary journal Progress in Development Studies and is currently a member of the International Editorial Boards of the journals Third World Quarterly, Journal of Eastern Caribbean Studies, and Blackwell Geography Compass.� Rob Potter was elected to the Academy of Social Sciences in 2006 and in 2007 was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science (DSc) by the University of Reading, in recognition of his contributions to the fields of Geographies of Development and Urban Geography.

Ideas to build upon, love the book.

I was gifted this product and I must say that I really enjoy using it with my two children. One is in K/1st and the other in 4th grade both home educated. We use this to initiate conversations. They like discussing the character traits, one by one and although we haven't done the totality of the book together yet I read through it. It is easy to use and any family can use the principles inside it. Let's support and build up our families one by one and the community will become stronger for it. Asante Sana.
