Great book

I found about the Kyogokudo series through a recent anime called Mouryou no Hako, the second book in the series. The Summer of Ubume is the first.

I found the pace of the book to be rather slow in the beginning chapter, but once the investigative work started up, I couldn't put the novel down. I read a good majority of it in two days times.

His character Akihiko Chuuzenji purports, "There is nothing strange in this world." The author, Natsuhiko Kyogoku, attempts to meld what is considered supernatural with the real world. He writes about a post-WWII modernizing Japan that still holds traditional superstitions such as possessing people with spirits. The lectures given by Chuuzenji often attempt to debunk the idea of spirits as the cause of a particular misfortune or explain certain phenomena like clairvoyance as something very real and of this world. It can be heavy at times, but the theories that he throws out are interesting and makes one think.

I would recommend this novel to people who enjoy the mystery genre but are not faint of heart. The truth behind the case is rather gruesome and disturbing, and the author does not mind detailing it. It is also a look into Japanese folklore and spirits, a whole different culture.

I hope that Vertical Inc. will be able to translate the whole series, as this series is like nothing I've encountered before.

A risky translation reaps a great reward

This isn't exactly a popular title to be translating into English, and the subject matter should have made it an automatic rejection at the publishing house. Let me get this straight... this is a book about obscure elements of the Japanese occult... described for dozens of pages on end with exacting historical detail and explained via psychology and philosophy of the mind... and this detailed backstory almost takes up more of the book than the mystery itself? Who would read it?!

Well, under the hands of an able translator, this book is not only readable but quite exciting. It's an extremely memorable read and makes you think differently about paranormal stories. It's definitely a modern tale that appeals to one's skeptical instinct while still cranking up the suspense and the stomach-wrenching horror. Pick it up.

Bizarre mix of folklore, philosophy & crime

An ubume is the spirit of a woman who dies pregnant. Grieving for her dead child, she's always on the lookout for live babies to steal. She's having a field day in The Summer of the Ubume.

It's 1952, and Tokyo is still recovering from the war. Rumor says that several babies have gone missing from the Kuonji obstetrics clinic. Rumor also reports that a Kuonji daughter has been pregnant for twenty months! And her husband has vanished!

It will take a bevy of detectives to penetrate the multiple mysteries of the Kuonji family:

TThere's Enokizu, an eccentric visionary hired by a Ryoko Kuonji to find her sister's vanished husband. Then there's Kyogokudo - bookseller, Shinto priest and part-time exorcist who applies his penetrating intellect to the case. Then we have the narrator, Sekiguchi, depressive hack journalist with a mysterious desire to serve Ryoko. And finally there's Kiba, an actual police detective.

Early on, Kyogokudo lectures his friend Sekiguchi on reality vs. illusion. My attention frankly flagged after twenty-eight pages of this. But finally the pace picked up, and the plot became positively gothic, encompassing demons, deviants, possession, repression, colorful psychological aberrations and arcane herbal drugs. Amazingly, the author explains it all in terms of science, psychology and logic.

This is not my favorite Japanese novel. It's too over-the-top for my taste, but this very quality will appeal to many other readers. There's no doubt the book is inventive and original. And I did admire the author's passion for mischievous supernatural creatures. Natsuhiko Kyogoku is an expert on Japanese folklore.

Quintessential European draping techniques reference!

After learning European draping techniques I was thrilled to see that a book such as this exists. Applying all the balance lines first allows for technically perfect grainline comprehension. Stan Gibilisco has authored or co-authored more than 50 nonfiction books in the fields of electronics, general science, mathematics, and computing. He has worked as a technical writer in industry, as a shortwave radio broadcast station technician, as a radio-frequency design engineer, and as a magazine editor. One of Stan’s books, the Encyclopedia of Electronics (TAB Books, 1985), was named by the American Library Association (ALA) in its list of "Best References of the 1980s." Another of his books, the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Personal Computing (McGraw-Hill, 1995), was named as a "Best Reference of 1996" by the ALA.

An Excellent Introduction

This book covers all the basics neccessary to get a very basic understanding of electronics and electricity. Providing the neccessary formulas and definitions, this book makes a great study guide, with quizes and tests to help measure your progress. This book is good to have, but not absolutely neccessary because other books might cover the topics here and then delve deeper, but, for someone with no prior knowledge, this book is fairly simple to get through and understand while still teaching you everything you need to know to move ahead.

Great overview

There are countless excellent electronics books on the market, many targeted towards the beginner, but I believe that none are more suitable than this book for reading from beginning to end. If you take the intention of this book to heart, which is to skim the breadth of analog electronics, then you will find it to be a fun, fun read. Use it to create mental landmarks for your further exploration of specific topics. By no means should you expect to design a circuit just from having read this book, because that is definitely not what it is meant for.

The unfortunate fact is that analog electronics is a vast field, plagued with more apparent mysteries than is the field of digital electronics. For instance, many excellent introductory analog electronics books start with the op-amp and immediately dive into 5 chapters of detailed analysis of different op-amps and their circuits. (E.g. what is the frequency response, how to tweak it for temperature stability, what is the signal-to-noise ratio, etc, etc, etc.) That is what a circuit designer will appreciate, but to an electronics novice, getting a wonderful training in op-amps will not open his/her eyes to how anything fits in the big picture.

That is exactly where this book comes into play. It spends a mere few pages on the op-amp, doesn't try to analyze it hardly at all. You learn how you could possibly use it, and you're on to the next topic. At some point in the future, perhaps you might come across a circuit with an op-amp, you'll at least know what it roughly does, and if you choose, you can get another excellent book that focuses on op-amps to do your own design.

I think the market really needs a book such as this one, and the author has done a great service.

Highly Accessible Information For All Electronics Technicians

Stan Gibilisco's Electronics Demystified 2nd Edition is a great resource for electricians and electronics technicians at all levels of expertise. It brings together a very large amount of information without getting bogged down in too much math. I think just the right balance is achieved. It begins with a discussion of dc and ac circuit fundamentals including phase calculations, and makes it seem easy. I could not find any inaccurate or misleading information, just lots of good solid expertise. This book is an excellent introduction to the field and an excellent review for the more advanced reader.

For Fortran programmers who want to learn C++

This book was written for scientific programmers who program mainly in Fortran but who want to move into C++. It is a brief and elementary discussion of C++. The main features of C++ that make it different than C are not discussed until Chapter 17, and then only briefly. No discussion is given in the book on performance issues in C++ vs Fortran. Serious scientific programmers in Fortran have to face up to these issues and be convinced that C++ is the way to go if they are to make the switch. The book might be useful to those who want a quick look at C++.

not for any serious enineers

A waste of money! If you want to learn Numerical methods or need some C++ numerical code, don't buy this book. There are much better choice like "programming in C with numerical methods for engineers" by Kamal B. Rojiani or "an introduction to numerical methods in C++" by BH Flowers.

Introductory C++, not really a numerical methods book

I had ordered this book understanding it to be "C++ and Numerical Methods", whereas it's actually "An Introduction to C++ and Numerical Methods". It turns out to be about 75% introduction to C++, covering many aspects of the language as it was known in the mid-1990's. That's not a bad thing, just not what I was expecting.

I believed that there would be more "Numerical Methods" discussion with implementation in C++. Instead, it's mostly an introduction to C++ (but not an introduction to programming) with many of the examples oriented to introductory numerical algorithms. It does what it says and says what it does. For those moving to C++ from another language, this might fill in some gaps, but likely wouldn't serve as more than an introductory text.

If you want some good "numerical" books for C/C++, checkout out the "Numerical Recipes" books for C and C++, as well as "An Introduction to Numerical Methods in C++", which is more useful for "numerical methods" than as an introductory text.
