An inspiring story that will keep you chuckling along the way

Keeping up with the Slowpoke is a great young adult novel for those who are tired of the young adult novel. The author boldly refuses to conform to the cmmon tropes found in the genre by opting to focus on a young girl's search for purpose rather than an epic romance. I think this sends a great message to adolescent girls, who are often taught that their identity rests in their love life. Chloe Adler is an extremely strong and unique character that a reader does not come across frequently. She is not without her insecurities or faults, and she surely is not a stranger to failure. However, she faces all of these aspects of her life with unwavering courage, delivering spunky and smart commentary all along the way. This story is one that sticks with you, because not only is it fun and quirky, it confronts an unmistakeable truth about the human experience: we fail! This is something we must all come to terms with, and it can be especially difficult to do as a teenager. The author gives hope to those who may be disheartened by this fact, especially under all the pressures that come along with high school, by teaching us that by embracing our failures, we may finally succeed.

YA fiction at its most real

I just want to start off saying I love this book a lot. I grew up reading a lot of YA fiction, but none of the most popular ones I read during my time as a young adult seemed realistic. Ann Claire isn't afraid to write about the truth and how high school truly is, and without pretense. "Keeping up with the Slowpoke" takes you on a journey through a young 15 year old girl's struggle to find herself in the dog eat dog world of high school. High school isn't always sunshine and rainbows, and Claire's protagonist, Chloe, recognizes this and endures this fact through much of the story. There are a lot of obstacles in Chloe's way, but she never gives up—because life is never perfect, but all we can do is live it to the best we can. It's a beautiful message told in a poetic and hilarious way. Anyone can relate to the poetic honesty and truth offered within the pages of this book. Who better understands the complex layers of being a teenager in high school than a teenager herself? If you're tired of the typical 'girl meets boy' trope often found in YA fiction, read this book and understand the human experience told by someone who experienced it—and lived to tell the tale.

It's a coming of age story about a girl who wants to connect with something bigger in life than her insular existence in a comfortable suburb. The main character is a plucky teenager who fights to create an identity for herself at home and at school in the face of an indifferent world.
