Amazon.com Review
With more than 650,000 copies sold, massage therapist Lucinda Lidell's Book of Massage has been updated with new photos and instructional drawings. Not for the prudish, as the subjects in most of the photos are completely in the buff, the book presents an intense, information-packed, step-by-step guide to traditional massage, shiatsu, and reflexology.

No matter which method you choose to focus on (you're advised to choose one at a time), Lidell is thorough in her explanations of the strokes and techniques necessary to give relaxing, therapeutic massage in the privacy of your own home. Detailed drawings, diagrams, and photographs help to further demonstrate how to address each individual body part.

Divided into distinct chapters for each of the three methods, The Book of Massage also includes several sections that Lidell stresses are fundamental to all types of massage. The first is "Beginning," with information such as creating the right atmosphere (a warm room and soft lighting), applying oil, and finding a comfortable position. Additionally, Lidell suggests that everyone should review sections on the human touch and anatomy, both of which oddly come at the end of the book.

As thorough as The Book of Massage may be, do not expect to walk away from it an expert. As with any skill worth learning, giving good massage takes time, study, and practice, practice, practice. --Bree Altman

Beautifully written with great graphics and illustrations!

This is an amazing book. It gave me a whole new outlook on massage and how valuable it is for body maintenance and health in general. There is a lot of intimacy within this practice (hence why massage parlors make the headlines all the time). It's quite beautiful and sensuous, but also very methodical and healthy. I bought this for my husband due to his many RA joint ailments. Additionally it alleviates his stress and helps him to disassociate from his rough day at work. It helps to reduce the inflammation in his knees, elbows, ankles and wrists. The book is very extensive and covers everything, from the actual concept of massage and the many variations available. It also covers reflexology and trigger therapy. So much information that has been well sought out and researched. Excellent illustrations with step-by-step guidance for beginners. I highly recommend this book if you want to not only get closer to your companion, but share in an art that is truly intense and binding.

Easy to read, not too complicated, and I LOVE the retro photos - really adds character to the book. My boyfriend has commented that my massages are better now, and I find myself going for about an hour just to try out everything I've learned.

Turner: The Extraordinary Life and Momentous Times of J.M.W. Turner, by Franny Moyle

The life of one of Western art's most admired and misunderstood painters

J.M.W. Turner is one of the most important figures in Western art, and his visionary work paved the way for a revolution in landscape painting. Over the course of his lifetime, Turner strove to liberate painting from an antiquated system of patronage. Bringing a new level of expression and color to his canvases, he paved the way for the modern artist.

Turner was very much a man of his changing era. In his lifetime, he saw Britain ravaged by Napoleonic wars, revived by the Industrial Revolution, and embarked upon a new moment of Imperial glory with the ascendancy of Queen Victoria. His own life embodied astonishing transformation. Born the son of a barber in Covent Garden, he was buried amid pomp and ceremony in St. Paul's Cathedral.

Turner was accepted into the prestigious Royal Academy at the height of the French Revolution when a climate of fear dominated Britain. Unable to travel abroad he explored at home, reimagining the landscape to create some of the most iconic scenes of his country. But his work always had a profound human element. When a moment of peace allowed travel into Europe, Turner was one of the first artists to capture the beauty of the Alps, to revive Venice as a subject, and to follow in Byron’s footsteps through the Rhine country.

While he was commercially successful for most of his career, Turner's personal life remained fraught. His mother suffered from mental illness and was committed to Bedlam. Turner never married but had several long-term mistresses and illegitimate daughters. His erotic drawings were numerous but were covered up by prurient Victorians after his death.

Turner's late, impressionistic work was held up by his Victorian detractors as example of a creeping madness. Affection for the artist’s work soured. John Ruskin, the greatest of all 19th century art critics, did what he could to rescue Turner’s reputation, but Turner’s very last works confounded even his greatest defender.

TURNER humanizes this surprising genius while placing him in his fascinating historical context. Franny Moyle brilliantly tells the story of the man to give us an astonishing portrait of the artist and a vivid evocation of Britain and Europe in flux.

Review
“[Moyle’s] history flows attractively… her text keeps us aware of the Europe-wide wars…These wars and the meteorological melodramas devised on his easel seem to complement one another, each shining a lurid stormlight on what Moyle dubs an ‘epic’ era. Her book stirs with its suggestions of the interconnections…. Moyle… lend[s] Turner a rounded and sympathetic persona.” —The New York Review of Books

“Moyle carefully documents Turner’s impact on European art, and she includes a selection of color plates to illustrate the evolution of his work. Turner’s unconventional life also makes fascinating reading. This biography is highly recommended.”— Historical Novel Society

“A textured portrait of a complex artist…. Moyle proves herself a critic whose erudition stems from countless hours smelling the paint and gazing at brushstrokes, as well as a biographer who’s spent time in the archives, analyzing sketch books and hunting down letters… As a general biography, ‘Turner’ is excellent. Moyle’s background as a television producer comes through in her engaging narrative structure, and her beautiful prose conveys Turner’s glittering work and the sheer scope of his achievements.”— Washington Post

“An exemplary work… Moyle explores the whole of his long life, expertly charting the artist’s development from his precocious conquering of the Royal Academy to his late, experimental paintings. Moyle is especially good at delineating Turner’s artistic methods and her enthralling account is filled with an impressive understanding of his unique talent.”– Ian Critchley, Sunday Times

“A thorough, balanced and wonderfully fluent account. Franny Moyle [is] one of the best in the long line of ]Turner’s] biographers. One of Turner’s many achievements was to paint Britain in all its moods … and show his peers the real nature and variety of their own country. In her immaculate biography Moyle has done something similar with the man himself.”— Michael Prodger, Times

“Moyle is good on Turner’s momentous times, interweaving history, the history of art and the public’s attitude toward art.”— Claudia Fitzherbert, Telegraph

“It is hard, on one level, to believe his sublime canvases ... come with a character attached at all. But Moyle tells the human story well in a book of rigorous scholarship and beauty…She offers an earthy, warts-and-all depiction of the Romantic master JMW Turner that is shaped by the dogged realism of a low-born man who had an exceptional artistic vision…This is well written and meticulously researched…All we once had left of Turner were his paintings, now we have another vibrant biography to commemorate his art, and where it took us.”— Lorraine Courtenay, Irish Independent

“Elegant and thorough…Moyle’s superb evocation of these aspects of her subject allows us to see Turner less as the “misunderstood genius” who moved in a sphere untouched by the realities of the day, and “more as an arch manipulator and central player in the great game of art that evolved across the late 18th and 19th centuries, a man praised to the hilt by a great many of his contemporaries [who] acknowledged his significance in the creation of the idea of the independent artist”. It is to Moyle’s credit that she is able to make this persuasive case while narrating Turner’s life with verve, intelligence and insight, and while bringing to life the world in which he lived with care and subtlety. This is a biography that leaves you with a fresh impression of both Turner and his time. It frees its subjects from myth, and imbues them with the quality of wonder.”— Matthew Adams, I News

“Franny Moyle tells a compelling story of a self–taught prodigy... A restless painter who always sought new forms of expression in watercolour and oils. Moyle is an unpretentious art historian, and she has written an inviting and easily digested biography of the best of British painters.”– Stephen Fay, Economist

“Moyle's art-historical perceptions make this detailed and beautifully balanced biography a compelling read... Turner emerges from it larger... revealed as a man of his moment.”— Brian Morton, Scottish Herald

“Miss Moyle tells a very good story. She is sound on the art without allowing art historicism to weigh her down. She is also excellent on the complicated politics of the Royal Academy. We get a feel for the man in all his cantankerousness and eccentricity, but she also brings out the humour and —at least after he had made his own fortune—the generosity, especially towards his fellow artists.”—Country Life

“Detailed and persuasive.”—Andrew Marr, BBC Radio 4 Start the Week

“Moyle is good on Turner’s momentous times, interweaving history, the history of art and the public’s attitude toward art.”— Sunday Telegraph

“A biographical must-read… The words on the page offer views every bit as captivating as Turner’s ageless panoramas.”—Summer Read, Big Issue

“Moyle is excellent at establishing these stylistic contexts. ... her art-historical perceptions are what make this detailed and beautifully balanced biography so compelling a read. It's rare that one finishes a modern biography feeling that the subject has been enhanced and not merely dissected. McKern and Spall can step aside. The real Turner is onstage.”—Herald

“In rip-roaring style… [His life provided] rich pickings for any biographer, and Moyle gives them the drama they deserve. Moyle is consistently perceptive about Turner’s work. Her narrative is as colourful as it is pacy.”—John Preston, Daily Mail

“What Ruskin misses, but Moyle writes about so persuasively, is Turner's ambition.”—Four star review, Laura Freeman, Mail on Sunday

“Like all good storytellers, Moyle begins with high drama… a popular rather than scholarly work… the author enlivens her tale with perfect details… [an] excellent biography.”--Kirkus (starred)

“Franny Moyle’s biography…is a fat, satisfying popular history of the man who was arguably Britain’s greatest painter. Ms. Moyle has not written academic art history; she is entertaining on Turner’s life and good on his times.” —The Economist

“Fresh and lively… Turner’s life is given a vivid colour and depth as Moyle deftly interweaves his professional career with his private life. Moyle writes with sensitivity about individual pictures and series, and is good at explaining the context.” —BBC History Magazine

“Moyle’s [book] is… satisfying, not least because it allows for the intimacy of reading. Less is more when it comes to biography – and Moyle gives Turner’s restless life a perspective and a frame.” —The New Statesman

“Franny Moyle’s biography…is a fat, satisfying popular history of the man who was arguably Britain’s greatest painter. Ms. Moyle has not written academic art history; she is entertaining on Turner’s life and good on his times.” —The Economist

A wet, wintry day in mid-December 1851. The man from Mrs Foord's frame-makers stood in the rain and knocked on the door of 47 Queen Anne Street in Marylebone, the professional address of the most famous living British artist, J. M. W. Turner RA. Foord's man had work to do there.

'Turner's Den', as it had become known, looked more like the premises of a painter long dead than the workplace of a living legend. The quiet classical frontage, which once sat respectably alongside the street's other examples of Georgian restraint, had been let go. The windows were filthy, their cracked panes patched with paper. The paint on the front door had blistered and the iron palisades were rusty.

A short hag of a woman answered the frame-maker's knock. Her large head was draped with a piece of flannel, striving to conceal a nasty skin affliction. This was Hannah Danby, Turner's long-time housekeeper. She led Foord's man into a square vestibule barely illuminated by the neglected arched windows to either side of the door, which had become caked with dust. The hall was an empty brown space, bereft of ornament.

As he followed Danby upstairs, the gothic adventure continued. The tradesman was led into the top-lit custom-made gallery where Turner's paintings were displayed. The rain was 'flooding in by the skylight', Foord's man would later remember. 'Turner would not pay for plaster - so they had to put paper as well as they could - several pictures damaged.'

Foord's man saw nothing of Turner himself the day he worked in his rain-soaked gallery. This was not unusual. The old painter had become increasingly retiring in his dotage, and over the last twelve months or so had even begun absenting himself from his business engagements at the Royal Academy.

For Hannah Danby, however, it was less her master's absence from his professional commitments that was of concern. It was his absence from his own home that was causing her considerable anxiety in December 1851. The seventy-six-year-old Turner had not set foot in Queen Anne Street since June. This was not entirely out of character for a man who for the last five years had, clearly, been keeping a second home, and from whom she was used to receiving instructions via the postboy. But as Christmas approached, Hannah Danby was beginning to fret. She did not know exactly where her master's second home was, and she sensed something was wrong. She began to search for anything that might suggest its location. A letter discovered in a coat pocket with a Chelsea address was what she needed.

And so on 16 December Hannah Danby sought out a friend, probably Maria Tanner, the woman who assisted her in the care, such as it was, of Queen Anne Street, and the two of them headed south to Chelsea. They found themselves on the stinking Cremorne New Road, a small lane along the Thames that ran from the old wooden Battersea Bridge to the Cremorne Jetty, where penny fares brought revellers by steamboat to the Pleasure Gardens of the same name.

Skirting a muddy foreshore, smelling of the open drains that spilled into the river and peppered with dogs and chickens picking their way through the flotsam and jetsam of the river, Cremorne New Road presented a sharp contrast to the grandiose streets of the West End. Nevertheless, here, facing the timber yards and chemical works of Battersea, was a row of cottages that made up Davis Place. And at No. 6, between Alexander the boat builder and a couple of beer sellers, she found a modest yellow brick house, dating from the 1750s.

Despite the seedy location, it was charming enough in its own way - a three-storey, mid-terrace house, fronted by a low wooden picket fence and gate that contained a cottage garden, it betrayed the personal touches of domesticity that accompany a lengthy tenancy. A wooden lattice porch over the front door housed potted plants and a caged starling. The property's three front-facing windows all had lovingly planted window-boxes, and creepers had been allowed to grow up from one of them and crawl over the uppermost reaches of the fa?ade. But most significantly, in contrast to the neighbouring houses, No. 6 had been customized, at no little expense, to accommodate a high-level balcony or viewing platform, which, cut into the roof and contained by wrought-iron rails, offered an artist a bird's-eye view of London's river stretching out below.

But Turner was not on his platform the day Danby called. And though she quickly ascertained from neighbours that a man fitting her master's description was at home, she also discovered from the hushed tones and shaken heads that they believed he was dying. On hearing this news, Hannah could not bring herself to go in. Instead, distraught, she determined to seek the assistance of Turner's cousin and solicitor, Henry Harpur.

Henry Harpur lived in Lambeth. He was seventeen years his cousin's junior. The Harpurs and the Turners were strongly entwined. They shared not just blood, but plenty of family business, not least the final revisions Turner made to his will. They had also travelled together on the Continent. On 17 December he visited Chelsea at Hannah Danby's request.

The interior of the little house in Chelsea was modestly furnished, though its few contents reflected the interests of its occupant. The Art Journal and Illustrated London News were on the parlour table; the walls were hung with engravings. Here, on the uppermost storey, Harpur found the old painter in a soporific haze, having been spoon-fed for the past few days a diet of milk and brandy. He had lost all ability to talk. The bird-like man, whose intense gaze and beaky nose had once complemented a robust, if short, square frame, was now a mere waif, ebbing away. He was being nursed by plump and homely Sophia Booth, the woman who shared his life at No. 6 Davis Place. She was a widow, more than twenty years the painter's junior.

Harpur grasped the seriousness of Turner's condition immediately and knew that he must begin to prepare the world for the departure of one of its most eminent men. The very next day, 18 December, he wrote to Turner's long-time family friend, the architect Philip Hardwick, warning him that Turner's demise was imminent. Hardwick, now turning sixty, white-haired and balding, was the spitting image of his own father, who had known Turner as a boy. Like the Harpurs, the Hardwicks had shared a long history with the Turners.

A day later another note from Harpur was in Hardwick's hand. Turner was dead. He had passed away at 10 a.m. on 19 December. Hardwick had been deprived of the opportunity of saying goodbye to a friend who had known him man and boy. But on 19 December Harpur, no longer constrained by his eminent cousin's instructions, furnished Hardwick with the details of the whereabouts of the body. Hardwick alone was afforded this privilege and he went straight away to Davis Place to say his goodbye.

Harpur met Hardwick at the little house in Chelsea. It must have become immediately clear to both men that the circumstances of Turner's death could, if not properly managed, erupt into a national scandal that would eclipse the plaudits for his extraordinary work and compromise his ardent desire to be buried in honour in St Paul's Cathedral. After all, Turner had not only been discovered in an insalubrious location, in an undisclosed second home, he had also been discovered living in what much later would be described as a state of 'moral degradation'. Taken alongside his recent reclusivity, and the state of affairs in Queen Anne Street, this new twist in Turner's story was an unwelcome one. Were it to become public knowledge, it would only add fuel to the persistent theories in circulation that the old painter had lost his mind during the course of the last decade.

These allegations of madness had been prompted by what his public considered the increasingly bizarre and indecipherable paintings Turner had produced across the 1840s, works that critics were not afraid to condemn as utter 'abortions'. For the last decade he had turned out canvases that explored light, and the elements, in unique and highly experimental ways. Ships rocked, whales thrashed, and trains sped through raging storms and whirling mists that were unlike anything that had been presented to the public before. In what often felt like dreamscapes, the sunsets and sunrises he had once been so famed for painting with delicate luminosity had become substantive. His ghostlike characters were no longer bathed in light but swept up by it, in a parallel world of fog and fiery chaos.

Harpur understood only too well that if the true circumstances of Turner's death were to become widely known, it would be all too easy for the public to dismiss his final decade of toil and experiment. How convenient for Turner's critics to be able to confirm that the exquisite painter had indeed departed some ten years previously, leaving just this Chelsea relic to finish his career. A reputation already much dented was on the cusp of being roundly destroyed. Turner's fame was on the point of tipping into infamy.

As Hardwick left Davis Place he took with him a letter he saw that Turner had written to the stockbroker Charles Stokes. Apart from being a close friend, Stokes, a man now well into his sixties, had been both a dedicated collector of Turner's work for many years, and a business associate who oversaw some financial matters for him.

'Dear Stokes,' Turner had written. 'Enclosed is a wish for Mr F Marsh to advance on my account 100. I do not like the debts of Mr Woods - not paid. Have the goodness to do it.' These were almost certainly the last lines the artist wrote.

Now Hardwick scribbled his own postscript. 'Knowing the interest you have taken in all matters connected with Mr Turner,' he wrote, 'I thought you should be informed that we have lost him.' The letter reached Stokes's rooms at 4 Verulam Buildings, Gray's Inn Road, the very next day, 20 December.

As Stokes grieved in Gray's Inn, the news of Turner's death spread further through his closest circle. On 21 December, a stormy Sunday, another black-bordered envelope found its way to Denmark Hill. John James Ruskin returned wet and wind-swept from church to find correspondence from Thomas Griffith, Turner's agent. Griffith explained that he had not wanted Ruskin to discover news of Turner's demise in print.

John James Ruskin was exactly the same age as Charles Stokes. Both had been born in 1785, and were ten years Turner's junior. Like Stokes, Ruskin considered himself a friend of the artist. Ruskin had built a considerable fortune as a wine merchant, and with it he had indulged his son John's passion for Turner's work. John Ruskin junior had adored Turner's painting since he was a boy. As an undergraduate at Oxford he had written a defining defence of the artist's work that had launched his own career as the most pre-eminent art critic of his generation. Thanks to his father's generosity, he now had twenty-five watercolours as well as two oil paintings by the artist - a collection that at this stage still hung in the family home.

From the elder Ruskin's point of view at least, the timing of Turner's passing was somewhat ironic. Just three days earlier he had been bidding at Southgate and Barrett's Christmas sale for a watercolour by Turner, of Carisbrooke Castle, on the Isle of Wight. That evening, the Fleet Street sale-room had been packed to the brim with dealers and collectors. But Ruskin, a man who had not become rich by spending his money freely, had sent his picture framer to bid for him, under express instruction not to pay above fifty guineas for the work, only to see it go to a dealer prepared to pay 80.

On reading Griffith's note John James now sat down solemnly, in front of another of Turner's watercolours that hung at Denmark Hill. It was The Red Rigi, painted nearly a decade earlier, a depiction of the mountain that dominates Lake Lucerne in Switzerland, bathed in a fiery red evening glow. And then he picked up his pen to write to his son, who had been in Venice since September:

I have another loss to announce ... Mr Turner - I can say no more till I go to Norwood and see Griffith who kindly sent me a note this forenoon during Church ... a suitable day for the intelligence - the shortest and darkest - wet & tempestuous ... I thank you for ... a liking for the Red Rigi for the solemnity of that picture has fed & soothed me like a dead march all this evening. It is the only picture I care for tonight - I earnestly hope you will not let this hurt your health - There is no power gone exactly with his Life for his power had already departed - & you seemed to be prepared for this event.

Once unburdened of its grave intelligence, John James's letter revealed another reaction to news of Turner's death - a commercial one. He had recently put aside 650 for the purpose of enlarging his collection of Turner's work further. Now John James was regretting letting Carisbrooke Castle go. But he realized that with the artist's death a huge amount of new work would most likely come on to the market with the sale of his estate. It would be an opportunity that the Ruskins must be prepared for.

'I do not think you need distract your arrangements to acquire any remains,' he suggested. 'There is little chance of Executors bringing anything to sale till ... May or June - but please tell me all you want. There will be excitement & high prices as in Wilkie's case in the period of his Death which will afterwards give way.'

Over the next few days Ruskin continued to ponder the market ramifications of Turner's death, news of which had not yet broken in the press. Despite the imminence of Christmas, he was impatient to find out more about the disposal of Turner's estate.

On 22 December he wrote to his son again, this time explaining: 'Mr Griffith ... has gone to a meeting of Executors ... No one at present knows where he died but they promise to let us know particularly and there will be plenty of time for you to say what you wish.'

Harpur and Hardwick, meanwhile, had been busy making sure that despite the increasing curiosity as to the place of Turner's departure from mortal life, no one would find out. They had been swift in removing Turner's body from Chelsea and installing it where Turner should have died, in his professional premises at Queen Anne Street. A lavish hearse had arrived in Davis Place along with a large, expensive and heavy coffin, lined with lead and satin. Bemused locals watched as the undertakers, more used to the spacious homes of wealthy clients, could barely get the coffin through the door, and when it failed to go up the narrow stairs, the men were forced to bring the body down to it.

Does not worth the money
By Avishai Brandeis
Bad English, bad grammar, bad editing.
No one has done a proofreading before publishing this book. The book is FULL with mistakes and errors in English, grammar, typos, inconsistency in names and descriptions. Some times the mistakes lead to plain wrong statements. A dilettante editing of a book that could have been written much better. Disappointment!

Amazon.com Review
For kids to get their dose of action and thrills, they need not always go to the local multiplex for the latest bang 'em up film. They could try such books as The Whipping Boy, which relies not on exploding spaceships and demonic robots but mythic story, humorous characters and, ready or not, a moral. The plot involves the orphan Jemmy, who must take the whippings for the royal heir, Prince Brat. Jemmy plans to flee this arrangement until Prince Brat beats him to it, and takes Jemmy along. Jemmy then hears he's charged with the Prince's abduction as this Newbery Medal winning book turns toward a surprising close.

From Publishers Weekly
With his flair for persuading readers to believe in the ridiculous, Fleischman scores a hit with his new creation. Sis's skillful pictures emphasize events in the adventures of the orphan Jemmy, kept in his king's palace to be thrashed for the offenses committed by the royal heir, known as Prince Brat. It is forbidden to punish Brat, whose tricks multiply until Jemmy is tempted to escape the daily round of flogging. But the prince himself takes off and forces the whipping boy to go with him. As they get into and out of trouble on the outside, Jemmy hears that he has been accused of abducting Brat. When the prince arranges for their return to the palace, poor Jemmy fears the worst, but things turn out for the best at the story's satisfying close. Colorful types like a thief called Hold-Your-Nose Billy, Betsy and her dancing bear Petunia, et al., increase the fun.
Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-7 Roles are changed when young Prince Brat, as everyone calls him (he is so altogether rotten that "Not even black cats would cross his path"), runs away with Jemmy, his whipping boy (the commoner who takes the Prince's punishments). Because Brat has never learned to write and Jemmy can, a couple of prince-nappers decide that Jemmy is the real prince. Chiefly through Jemmy's cleverness, the two escape and return to court. Brat has learned much and changed for the better during his adventures. He winds up calling Jemmy "friend," and he is certain to be a better prince hereafter. This whimsical, readable story delights in the manner of Bill Brittain's books The Wish Giver (1983) and The Devil's Donkey (1981, both Harper). Full-page black-and-white illustrationssomewhat grotesque but always complementaryadd attractiveness to the story. The mistaken identity plot is always a good one: children, even fairly old ones, like disguises and this kind of mix-up. Supplementary characters are well-drawn both by Fleischman and by Sis, so the whole hangs together in basic appeal. Readers could well move from The Whipping Boy to its much longer cousin, Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper. Well Told Story, Moves Quickly
By Ohioan
This is a well-told story told at a quick pace. As kids read it, they won't even be aware that they're learning English history: whipping boys, dancing bears, coaches, rat catchers, fairs. Jemmy, an orphan, has been made whipping boy to Prince Horace, whom all outside the castle call Prince Brat. Whenever the Prince doesn't do his sums or read his lessons or behave properly, the whipping boy, dressed in finery something like that of the Prince, gets whipped. But Jemmy won't cry out or howl in pain, and this frustrates the Prince.

One night the Prince enters Jemmy's room and commands him to follow: Prince Brat is running away from home. The boys don't get very far at all before they're kidnapped by a pair of bandits, who think that the Prince is, in fact, the Prince. But Jemmy gets them to believe that he, Jemmy, is the real Prince because he can read and write -- Prince Brat has never paid attention to his lessons and can neither read nor write. As the ransom note is being delivered, Jemmy and the Prince escape. Jemmy wants to be on his own and return to the world of being a rat-catcher in the sewers -- which he considers a better existence than being whipping boy to a brat. But the Prince will not stop following Jemmy, and observing what happens. During the course of the escape, both Jemmy and the Prince change. The Prince learns about friendship, and he learns why Jemmy would never cry or howl in pain while being whipped. Jemmy learns that he doesn't want to return to the underground world of sewers where there are no books.

A satisfying story.

Amazing book!
By Bryan D. McCarty
One of my favorite books of all time! This book made me like reading when I was in the 8th grade and I haven't looked back since! The wording is a little tough, but the story is amazing and the students in my class loved it!

Full of lessons learned and actionable strategies - very comprehensive.
By Peter Allen
Geared towards the go-getter who's starting or running a storage auction resale business.

This guide covers everything that's involved to get going, and contains lots of great real-world examples to emphasize points made in the book. Mike's writing style is easy and enjoyable to read, very relatable and I definitely learned some things.

The content doesn't shy away from the real work. It's obvious from the first read that Mike doesn't sugar coat the business and definitely isn't "selling the dream".

This cuts through the hype and covers most if not all aspects of running the business, from buying merchandise at storage auctions, to merchandising the store, growing your customer base, marketing your brand, and keeping customers happy.

Some sections, like the chapter on building a web site for your business, are probably better covered elsewhere - but as a complete guide this book touches on pretty much everything.

Reads like a crash course, not a lot of fluff but plenty of great content if you're interested in the storage auction business.

Great book. Don't hesitate to buy.
By Laura the Amazon Customer
I am blown away by this book. It is well written, no spelling errors, well organized, and very informative. I was really expecting it to be useless, and that I would toss it after a few pages, but I am half way thru and thoroughly mesmerized by the information. Definitely get this book if you are interested in getting into this business. It is great.
I am not a relative of the author, and I have never written an Amazon review before (that I can remember doing). I just really loved this book. Kudos to the author.

Lots of good information! I probably wont do any of it, but it is actually detailed. Got 4 stars for all the seeming plugs for which websites to use, and which products to buy, but I may be over reacting

The Armchair Economist: Economics and Everyday Life, by Steven E. Landsburg

Seat belts cause accidents because well-protected drivers take more risks. This widely documented fact comes as a surprise to most people, but not to economists, who have learned, perhaps better than most, to take seriously the proposition that people respond to incentives in complicated ways. In The Armchair Economist, Steven E. Landsburg shows how economic thinking illuminates the entire range of human behavior. But instead of focusing on the workings of financial markets, international trade, and other topics distant from the experience of most readers, Landsburg mines the details of daily life to reveal what the laws of economics tell us about ourselves. As Landsburg shows, some behavior that strikes most people as utterly unremarkable is quite extraordinary when seen through economists' eyes. Why, for example, does popcorn cost so much at the movie theater? The "obvious" answer is that the theater owner has a monopoly. But if that were the whole story then he would charge a monopoly price for use of the restrooms as well. When a sudden frost destroys much of the Florida orange crop and prices skyrocket, journalists often point to "obvious" evidence of monopoly power. Economists see just the opposite: If growers had monopoly power, they wouldn't have to wait for a frost to raise prices. Why do restaurants earn higher profits on liquor than on food? Why are some goods sold at auction and others at pre-announced prices? Why don't concert promoters raise ticket prices even when they sell out months in advance? Why do box seats at the ballpark sell out before bleachers do? Why do corporations confer huge pensions on failed executives? Landsburg wields the tools of the economist's tradeto solve these puzzles, often reaching conclusions that are at odds with our intuition. After revealing economic principles in readily apparent phenomena of everyday life, Landsburg applies these same principles to newspaper and media accounts of public issues. Contesting the wid

From Publishers Weekly
Landsburg demystifies the economics of everyday behavior in these diverting if not always persuasive essays. Why don't promoters of sell-out rock concerts raise the advance ticket price? Because, suggests the author, promoters want the good will of teenage audiences who will buy lots of rock paraphernalia. Why are executives' salaries so high? One reason, opines Landsburg, is that stockholders expect managers to take risks, and well-heeled executives are more likely to do so. Associate professor of economics at the University of Rochester in New York, Landsburg applies his counter-intuitive analyses, with mixed results, to everything from taxes, auctions, baseball and the high price of movie theater popcorn to government inefficiency, the death penalty, environmentalism (which he attacks as a dogmatic, coercive ideology) and NAFTA.

From Library Journal
Landsburg (economics, Univ. of Rochester) demonstrates the economist's way of thinking about everyday occurrences. The result is a compilation of questions ranging from why popcorn costs so much at movie theaters and why rock concerts sell out to why laws against polygamy are detrimental to women. Many of the issues raised are controversial and even somewhat humorous, but they are clearly explained only from an economic perspective as opposed to other dynamics of human behavior. There are also clear explanations of the misconceptions about unemployment rates, measures of inflation, and interest rates. The book is not a textbook but shows how one economist solves puzzling questions that occur in daily living. Recommended for general collections.

From Kirkus Reviews
An economics professor's sometimes charming, sometimes glib, always counterintuitive guide to evaluating the small anomalies of daily life in a free-market society. In a series of interchangeable chapters, Landsburg (University of Rochester) asks questions like: Why do laws mandating use of seat belts increase the rate of traffic accidents, as statistics show they do? Because, he says, drivers have been given an incentive to drive more quickly and less carefully by being made to feel protected. In the service of what he calls efficient markets, Landsburg argues that wheat farmers, say, ought to be forced to pay damages done to their crops by sparks thrown off from railroad trains, since such damages can be borne more cheaply by farmers than by the railroad companies that are at fault. When analyzing the costs and benefits of legalizing drugs, he admonishes that increased tax revenues from a heretofore untaxable criminal activity are a neutral item; transfer of wealth from individuals to government is never equivalent to the creation of new wealth and may even be a societal drain. In general, Landsburg cheerily points out, economists value efficiency rather than justice, market solutions over legislated compromises, consumption over saving, and the creation of wealth above all else; these principles secretly drive the profession's public analyses of criminal penalties, tax policy, environmental legislation, and the ultimate good of market- based free trade. For all his cleverness, Landsburg never seriously questions the ``neutral'' assumptions of the dismal science--a fact that considerably decreases the value of his book. -- Copyright 1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. Economics taken to the next-level
By SHAIBU I.
I nearly returned the book the very moment I received it after purchase and flipping through the pages. I thought I had the wrong book because it was part of the set of textbooks my Professor in Economics in Agribusiness recommended and as an economic textbook, the first thing I expected to see was the usual demand and supply curves and equations and because they were conspicuously missing I thought I had the wrong book.
Indeed it was worth recommending and reading. This is a book that took Economics to the next level; making effort to present Economic theories to the non-economists. It touches on real life issues and written in plain and clear English without any economic jargon which may be difficult to read and understand by non-economists.
The writer made great efforts to argue and dispute several misconceptions in life by applying the realities and economic principles. Some of arguments and concerns on some issues were quite controversial and appear to be based on value judgements. As a result, one may not fully agree with them based on one's values; but in general, it was an interesting reading.
I took special interest on the Environmentalist discussion on chapter 24. In as much as it sounded quite controversial to read because of strong advocacy for environment and conservationism (which I am a member), I saw the argument to be a great and interesting one. Indeed "if environmentalists were as passionate as they claim to be about conserving resources for future generations, I would expect more of them to oppose the taxation of capital income, the social security system and other policies that encourage consumption in the present". I found this interesting because truly, sometimes some advocacy concepts only take a parochial and narrow view on issues and that in total effect end up not education the masses well.
This not withstanding, there were other sections where issues were disputed but the author did not do much job to let the alternatives be very clear enough. An example is 'why popcorn cost more at the movies' on chapter 16. In this section, the author could not make it clear to my understanding what alternative approach could maximize profit for both popcorn and movie ticket sales.
In general however, this is a great book to read.

Insightful and catchy
By Jessica Roberts
I didn't buy this book based on a review I had read or heard but as a prescribed reading for my graduate class in economics. I expected this book to be boring and drab like most, but I was pleasantly surprised. What I find most captivating about this book is the fact that the writer uses everyday experiences and our individual preferences to shed light on basic economic principles that would otherwise have been difficult to comprehend. From the first to the last page this book is filled with thought provoking and nagging questions that I have never dared to ask myself. It isn't straightforward read but intricate in a way that it tasks your mind.
The Writer does not push his opinions on the reader but leaves you with a set of possibilities and solutions to choose from by analyzing every subject. For example in Chapter 11, he looks at the subject of deficits. I have never stopped to think twice about making a payment at the store, if I have money in my account or on my credit card I would just use any of the two methods without as much as caring about the costs I would incur by choosing either option. Landsburg has one powerful weapon-analysis, and he utilizes it in a way that is non threatening but very helpful to his readers.
After reading this book, not only do I understand certain topics better but I also know that every choice I make comes with a cost and benefit . At the end of the day I wouldn't want to lose more than I gained. I will definitely read this book again after my class is over, its like a book of life in economics

Great book!
By Stephany Flores
I had to read this book for one of my course in Graduate school and I have to admit that it end up being more entertaining than what I expected. A very good reading that illustrates how economists think and tries to teach some basic economic principles through simple stories.
The book does a really good job opening the eyes into new and valid points that are usually ignored when drawing conclusions. The chapter “How statistics lie” is a really good example of this. One of my favorite chapters “Iowa Crop Car” (The shorter in the book) gives a very simple and easy to understand explanation about trade theory.
One of the few things I don’t appreciate about the book is that sometimes asks a lot of questions and doesn't always provide the answers. (But maybe that’s just and opportunity to trigger the reader's critical thinking)
The last chapter of the book is a bit controversial, and will definitely not be enjoyed if you are an environmentalist. It’s hard to read it without letting your own preferences bias your opinion, however the author makes a very reasonable point stating that protecting the environment is a matter of preferences and involves trade-offs, that should not be overvalued in comparison to others peoples preferences.
