About the Author
My name is Stephen McGinity and although i have written, produced and composed many songs in the past, this however is my first ever written novel. I sincerely hope that i have done it, along with its contents justice and for anyone out there who is interested in reading about my adventures across America, i hope more than anything that you will go on to find it equally humorous, touching and informative. I have recently completed writing my debut fictional book, containing a selection of hard-hitting and gritty short stories. The release date for part one of this forthcoming trilogy will be sometime in early summer. Along with this, i also have a degree in Sound Engineering and Music Production, a qualification in Forensic Linguistics which includes being only the second person in its history to receive The Jean Stone Award for Outstanding Achievement in the above field and was recently awarded the NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writers Month) award for November 2011 at my very first attempt. I currently run my own small music and entertainment memorabilia business and enjoy travel, sport, music and living life.

Seeing America whilst smoking and drinking.

This Brit, who seems pleasant enough, really, really loves America. I expected a running commentary on how America stinks and was happily surprised. I got enthusiastic, through his writings, to get out and take another look at the old USA myself.
His appreciation of the sights, sounds and citizens of America was heart-warming.
Just a few negatives; his over-use of the word 'whilst', his constant 'cigarette breaks', and his bottomless capacity for bottles and glasses of wine. There were also a few bathroom scenes that I could have lived without.
Also a lot of his descriptions of sights sounded like they might have been copied right out of the brochure.
On the whole, I liked the book and as it's his first, I imagine the telling will improve with experience.

Hysterical

Think, The Rum Diaries meets On The Road and you will have some idea as to the sort of content of this book, although uniquely different in its own way. I have read both of those other books and now having read this one i have to give credit where it is due and say that i enjoyed it immensely. It is both funny and engrossing in equal measures and really kept me wanting to read another page in order to find out what Monty Python-esque situations the writer found himself to be in during his adventure across the states.
All in all, i loved it and it made me laugh a lot, even on the bus to work at 8am surrounded by strangers. This is a great debut by a clearly talented British author that, if you are like me, will give you itchy feet to get out there and travel and live life to the max!'

excellent book on exploring the US by a Brit

I myself am a Brit living in the US, and relate to a lot of the cultural differences that is described in this book. I have been asked the question that is the title of the book many times as an opening to conversations. I wonder if Americans start conversations with other Americans with the line, Excuse me, are you Arkansan? Virginian?, ...? It was funny, direct and enjoyable, and really shows how Americans enjoy interacting with visitors to their land, and breaks a lot of stereotypes than Europeans think about Americans. OK the language is strong but this adds to the realism of the author's thoughts rather than reading like a G-rated National Lampoonesque comedy. If you refuse to expose yourself to strong language, you are missing out on a lot of excellent books. The use of Whilst is not a grammatical error, as people state in other reviews. Brits use Whilst instead of While in a conversational tone, which is the tone that the author is using, and is one of those cultural differences. Read it with an open mind and you will enjoy the book.

I don't know why this edible tree book is missing maples. I bought it so I could learn more about tree tapping and other edible parts of trees. I'm not as excited about the book because it is missing the one tree I bought it for.

It’s an extract from Skylark (2009), the limited-edition long version of A Dark Matter (2010), which relates the backstory of the college student, Keith Hayward, sensationally killed at the novel’s climax. By then, Keith is a sociopath on the verge of following his uncle’s lead into serial murder. The novella lays out the course of his education for the trade by Uncle Till, right up to his—Keith’s—first murder. To Keith, beginning at least at age 12, Till is utterly fascinating, but when the handsome, apparently footloose man returns the interest in the wake of a neighbor’s suspicion that Keith has killed her cat and suggests that the boy find and use a special place for his possibly compromising pleasures, fascination becomes enthrallment. A novella by Peter Straub

This novella, a rumination on the nature of evil, as often with Peter Straub, is in fact a chapter from The Skylark removed while editing a Dark Matter. What I wanted to say is that there is no need to read A Dark Matter to enjoy this novella. It gives more details about the childhood of a serial killer. As usual with Peter Straub, it's very well written. Well, it depends what you're looking for. But as a dark tale, it's a gem! Thanks Peter Straub for writing so well. Enjoy!

I actually read this before "A Dark Matter". If you enjoy Straub, you will enjoy this. Straub does not tie up all the loose ends in most of his works, and this is no exception. If you are a reader that prefers nice, clean, tied-up endings, you may be disappointed with "A Special Place". "A Special Place" is a snapshot, rather than the movie that novels are. That being said, it is extremely well-written. The main characters are well-developed and are consistent throughout both books. The peripheral characters are outlined, but readers don't get to know them well.
Some have called "A Special Place" a study of the nature of evil. I don't agree. There are several non-fiction texts that do a much better job. Evil is not fictitious, so the study of it doesn't belong in the fiction category. "A Special Place" more accurately chronicles the nurturing and development of evil-which, to me, is infinitely more interesting.

Dark Hearts, Twisted Souls

Surgically removed from Peter Straub's novel A DARK MATTER and given life on its own as a novella, A SPECIAL PLACE is a disturbing glance down a lonely corridor to the darkest chamber of the human heart. This isn't a place you want to spend much time, lest the matter-of-fact evil rub off on you and taint your spirit. The gripping narrative is fascinating and that fascination may disturb you and raise uncomfortable questions about yourself. In other words, Straub deftly draws you into the story with little fanfare and leaves you to find your own way out.

Uncle Till is "a satyr, a faun, a devil" and a serial killer with a passion for torture. Nephew Keith Hayward is already well on his twisted way to becoming the fullblown sociopath we see in the novel A DARK MATTER. Uncle Till provides the knife and the inspiration, and Keith simply follows his heart. The centerpiece of horror is the "gift" the boy gives his uncle, and if you've already read A DARK MATTER, then you know what that gift will be, but that won't lessen the coldblooded horror of the act. (The novella deepens Keith Hayward's seemingly selfless act near the end of A DARK MATTER.)

In short, A SPECIAL PLACE is a good place to go if you want to be creeped out by Straub, streamlined and cutting to the bone with a few short strokes.

An excellent unbiased view of the subject

There are so many biased books/papers/articles/documentaries on this subject which take some pre-defined viewpoint and attempt to make some moral statement. This book is the only source of information I've ever seen which basically looks at why various ethnic groups behave the way they do, without assumptions, without guilt, without dogma, and without political correctness. This is the kind of book someone might write 500 years from now after the emotions have subsided on the subject.
This book will show you a new way of thinking about race and culture in America, with many surprising facts and concepts.

An America you have never seen before

This may well be the best book on American history which you will ever read. It doesn't delve into the politics of the times or discuss America's wars or its economics. What it does do is explore and examine the principal ethnic groups which immigrated to America and which now comprise the American scene. Each group is examined in turn and without prejudice starting with the Europeans (Irish, Germans, Jews, & Italians), going through the Asians (Chinese & Japanese) and Africans (Blacks), and concluding with the Latin Americans (Puerto Ricans & Mexicans). The history of each race or nationality is briefly outlined. The author then describes the status of the members of each group when they left for America, when they left, why they left, what their situation was upon their arrival, where they settled and why, and finally if and how they eventually managed to integrate themselves into the American way of life.

This then is the story of an America which the reader has probably never seen before. Through it the reader will likely learn much about America and its people and perhaps something about him/herself. He or she will also learn a myriad of little known facts about this great country we call home. For example: 1) that until 1651 slaves arriving in the colonies were treated as indentured servants and eventually became "free persons of color"; 2) that most intellectually prominent blacks in American history derived from this tiny group of "free persons of color;" 3) that the Irish and Chinese had a much harder time upon their arrival in America than did the slaves and were hired to perform work which was considered too dangerous for slaves (slaves were too valuable a property to put at risk); 4) that according to IRS records "slum lords" didn't make obscene profits at the expense of their tenants, but in most cases lost money (tenants often didn't pay their rent); 5) that Chinese didn't choose to go into the laundry business because they loved washing other people's dirty clothes but because no other avenues were open to them; 6) that the Japanese who were interned during WWII harbored no ill will but their grandchildren, who didn't experience the internment, did and do; 7) that Illegal alien Mexicans and some legal resident Mexicans have twice before been expatriated back to Mexico; and finally 8) that history repeats itself - only the races, religions, and ethnic groups change.

So, if you want to better understand and perhaps better appreciate your fellow Americans, here is your opportunity to walk in their shoes. I highly recommend it.

Wonderful overview by an awe-inspiring mind!

I wish all books could be like this one. To be sure, Sowell does have an ideology of sorts (being a small 'l' libertarian) but the facts are legitimately objective. One gets facts and stats first and only later the concluding opinion.
Nowadays, it is easy to label any 'compartmentalized' ethnic history as racist. After all, we are all equal right? Sowell argues albeit indirectly that equality exists in a legal sense, but that ethnic groups have undeniable differences. Sowell does not present this as a positive or negative. It just is, and as with any generalization, there are numerous exceptions.
I'm Scottish and Irish. I guess if I was a modern liberal, I would've taken offense to his historical observation that the irish are unusually hot-tempered and have not through history put a huge value on education. The problem is that history shows it to be true. The liberal mistake is to think that a generalization of any kind must be taken personally (ie: because the irish through history have been hot-tempered and because I'm irish, Mr. Sowell must be implying that I have a bad temper.) Mr. Sowell means nothing of the kind. The beauty of equality under law is that generalizations do not apply. This is the problem with liberal policy. Affirmitive action and quotas are based on generalizations (something liberals say they avoid). The generalization is that minority group A can not succeed without the quota, or that all people save for minority group A, have a predisposition against minority group A.
So the beauty of this book lies in it's objectivity. Mr. Sowell shows history as it is. No idealism. No opinion on how things ought to be, disguised as fact. Simply a real glimpse at the history of ethnic America. Hooray for America!

About the Author
Steve Cunha is a professor of geography at Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. He is also the director of the California Geographic Alliance and the National Geographic Bee Coordinator for the state of California. He has taught middle school and high school science, community college geography, and outdoor recreation. He served ten seasons as a national park ranger in Alaska and in California's Yosemite National Park. He lives in Arcata, California, with his wife and three children.

He was very comfortable with the questions even though he had never been ...

You NEED to go through these books if you are looking to be competitive in the National Geographic Bee. The actual bee questions are very similar - this will give newbies an idea of how and what to study. My son has been to our state bee twice- first as a 4th grader and last year as a fifth grader. He made it to the finals as a fourth grader and he used these and Geography Demystified book to study. He was very comfortable with the questions even though he had never been there. - Now I am not saying they are the same questions- because they are not, but they are at the same level and give you an idea of what kind of knowledge they are looking for! Good luck!

Finding this book finally brought an end to searching for a resource that combines instruction with beautiful photography and a wealth of small embroidery designs. If you're looking for something edgy and unusual, keep searching. The patterns in this book are classic and a thoughtful reminder of an era that created time for the pursuit of embellishing life with lovely needlework. I am motivated and inspired by what Vicki Haninger has presented in this book and thankful to her for the opportunity to learn from the projects and to find many ways to create with the designs.

Get your stitcheries on!

If you like cute adorable stitcheries, well then you'll love this book. Page after page of sweet lil pic's that has inspired me stitch. This book is bringing the funk back into embroidery. It is jam packed with ideas and nearly all the designs in it are easy enough for beginners. Luckily for me I bought it for myself for Christmas and what a treat it is indeed. I havent got anything negative to say about the book, only you wont regret having one of these books in your collection to inspire you :-)

Vicki has written an inspirational book filled with designs with a vintage feel. If you love to embroider and you enjoy a vintage look, this book will be a good buy for you. The instructions are clear and there are pointer for setting up a sewing area. Great book!

PROFESSOR BRIAN SCOTT-QUINN Chairman of the ICMA Centre for financial markets at Henley Business School, UK, & Director of Banking and Insurance Programmes. He worked in the fields of investment banking, trading, asset management, and stock broking prior to founding the ICMA Centre as a specialist university finance school. His career in the City of London started as a trainee with the merchant bank, Hill Samuel. He then became a fixed income analyst with Kidder Peabody Securities Ltd. Along with three others he was a founder of Ross and Partners Securities Ltd - a privately owned international bond trading house. After negotiating the sale of Ross & Partners to Drexel Burnham Inc. he became finance director of Drexel Burnham Lambert Securities Ltd responsible for funding and risk management. He then moved to Security Pacific Bank (now part of Bank of America Merrill Lynch), a Californian bank with an office in London. Initially a portfolio strategist he subsequently became strategy advisor to the Group CEO, working on issues relating to the commercial bank, the securities trading operation and the stock broker Hoare Govett. In 1995 the International Capital Market Association voted to allocate �3 million from their capital account to constructing a purpose-designed building to house the new ICMA centre. ICMA has since donated a further �5 million to the university which enabled the construction of a second facility that includes someone hundredThompson Reuters terminals with associated trading, valuation and asset management software. He was Director of the Centre from the time he founded it until 2006 when he took up the newly created post of Chairman. Today, the ICMA Centre is one of the largest university finance schools in Europe and is part of the triple-accredited (AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB) Henley Business School, the UK's oldest business school which is home to some 7,000 students from over 140 countries from Africa to Asia, South America to Europe.
His main areas of consulting, executive education and research are: strategy in the financial services industry, banking, wealth and asset management and trading systems. He has been a consultant to, amongst others, Westpac Bank, NM Rothschild, Canada Life Insurance, Australian Mutual Provident (AMP), Investec Bank, the London Stock Exchange and SWX Europe (the Swiss exchange). He was a member of the Financial Services Authority (FSA) industry working group on Secondary Bond Market Transparency. He has been a consultant to the US Treasury and to a central bank and in 1978/9 was a monetary policy advisor to Mrs Thatcher's first Chancellor of the Exchequer (finance minister), Lord Howe of Aberavon (Sir Geoffrey Howe). He is also a Director of the holding company for LendLoanInvest.co.uk, a peer to peer social lending website.
